All of the Henne haters on this forum have had the same arguement over and over again as to why Pennington was the starter and why Henne can't be a starter in the NFL.
It reads "If Henne is such a better QB than Pennington then why isn't he starting?"
Now I am not Pro-Pennington or Pro-Henne in any way, I am Pro-Dolphins, and I will give you my reasons at to why this statement just doesn't hold water when taking our FO/coaching staff into account.
1. There was no training camp battle as to who the starting QB was going to be. It was stated last year that CP was Sparano's guy. Henne would have had to have one of the best preseason's ever for a QB and he probably still wouldn't have started opening day.
2. This is definately the most important reason. Our front office and coaching staff has a long and telling history as to always starting the veteran QB. Here they are.
In 1980 Phil Simms was actually benched at the start of the season for veteran Scott Brummer. Even after playing well for Brummer in 1979 while he was injured Parcells still chose to bench Simms for the more experienced signal caller. It wasn't until week 6 when Brummer dislocated his thumb that Simms became the Giants full time QB.
In 2000 our very own Chad Pennington was drafted by the Jets by Parcells, but you know what? Pennington only made 3 appearances in his first 2 seasons. It wasn't until the fifth game of 2003 that Pennington took over the starting job after Vinny Testeverde was injured.
Lastly there is Tony Romo. Tony was an undrafted FA in 2003 and didn't become the Cowboys starter until October of 2006. This was after the Cowboys brought in veteran signal callers Testeverde and Bledsoe.
These facts just go to show you that our front office/coaching staff will always pick the veteran signal caller over the up and coming QB's. But you know what it also shows? When the younger signal caller was finally brought in, they were definately ready.
Here's to hoping Henne is ready to be an elite NFL QB as he is now getting the chance to prove it.
