espn does the coach rating thing every week, but this week they have a midseason report up. saban has the highest rating of any coach with a losing record

Highest Rating With A Losing Record
89% at 3-5 - Nick Saban, Dolphins

Maybe it's Ronnie Brown. Maybe it's the return of Ricky Williams. Whatever it is, sports nation is in love with what rookie head coach Saban has done in Miami during the first half of the season. Even after three straight losses through Week 7, Saban still registered a weekly rating of 70. Then, with a win over the Saints, his Week 8 rating jumped up to 92. Saban is winning fans over by getting it done on defense, as the Dolphins rank 10th in yards allowed

That rating could dip if he keeps sticking with Gus Frerotte the way Wanny stuck with Jay.

Ha ha. We had Fiedler for 5 years, I doubt Gus last any longer then this season at most. Funny thing about TERRIBLE Jay Fiedler..

His first 2 years we were 11-5 and won the AFC East, then the next year he's 7-3 as a starter, and the team goes 2-4 when he's injured.

He was 36-17 after his first 4 years in Miami. Regardless of what Fiedler was, I'd take him over Gus in a heartbeat. The man won games. Our defense was better then it is now, and we had the best running game in football for part of that record, but still...I'll take those big a** ears any day of the week over the...ahem....'QB' we have now.

Isn't it sad that out of all the colleges in the country, all the backups, all the guys on practice squads and Europe league and arena league...that the BEST Miami can put on the field is Mr. Ferrotte?

Saban's problem is that he fears if he pulls Gus and Sage/Lemon don't do well, if he goes back to Gus is his confidence ruined? Is the confidence of the offense/team ruined?

I think we've seen the best of Gus to this point. He seemed to start off hot and get worse as the season goes on, which I can't figure out. If you put a guy like Sage in, can he really do worse? I assume he'd throw more picks which would put our defense in bad situations. However, would he miss so many open guys? Perhaps our scores would be 28-24 instead of 17-10.

No matter which way you slice it, we're 1 win away from at least a tie for the division. I'm sure Saban believes it could be worse, which is why Gus is still on the field.

I think our defense was better then and NE was still floundering with Bledsoe at the helm. We had Madison and Surtain in their primes, not to mention good running backs like Lamar Smith for a season and then Ricky Williams in MVP mode. Jay = Gus. They both suck, throw to who knows where, and should be no more than backups.

I agree, I got real sick of Fieds as a starter. However, it's sometimes hard to look back at an 11-5 record for 2 straight years, and division titles and not think that we were better off with Fiedler vs. Gus. He could scramble and was a tough SOB. Considering the current state of NFL QB's, he wasn't so bad. The main thing to look at is how well we've done without him, not very.

Haha..OK, man..I have to stop defending Fiedler :rofl3:

its so true.

loyalty over choosing the better player.

i hate when coaches do this.

i hope gus hurts himself cause thats the only way to beat the pats unlike linehan decides to run the ball 95% of the time.

I don't think Gus should hurt himself. He's a quality backup. Just not a starter.

Saban has had a very good coaching ranking on ESPN all season, I'm surprised it's still so high.

Fiedler.....2000 playoffs.......six interceptions........please, Jay benefitted from having a top five defense with shutdown corners iin their prime and a running game, HE didn't win anything, although he often would lose them, especially when the games really mattered.

Guess what 3-5 noww is ****load better than we were at last year, saban is doing a good job,we have been in close games its just that Gus cant produce.

Saban has done a good job overall. Even when the team really struggled with penalties early on, they still had a chance to win. With the way things have gone in the east so far this year, they're still right in the playoff hunt. Not too bad for his 1st season.

Whoa whoa! Lamar Smith? Prime back? Wasn't till season of 02 did we see Ricky, btw since we've had Ricky 0 playoff appearances. Feidler was one of the more mobile QBs we had in a while, granted he ended up suckin REALLY bad last year. Prior to that he had his moments. I totally agree with the corners being better then than now tho.

Lamar Smith was a pretty good back when he played for us. Jay didn't end up sucking really bad. He was always bad. It's just that Jay's true colors came out during that year.

Well, Lamar was a 1000 yard rusher, something Marino never had, I was present at Pro Player when Lamar rushed for 200+ yards in the playoffs against Indy, it was Jay who tried to give that playoff game away with his 3 interceptions.

Jay held the Dolphins back, he didn't lead them anywhere.
