Philbin was ranked 29th out of 32 and in the bottom tier. He also ranked last in the AFC East below Bill Belichick (No. 1) of the New England Patriots, Rex Ryan (No. 17) of the New York Jets and even Doug Marrone (No. 28) of the Buffalo Bills.

Here is an excerpt from Sando’s article:

“Some credited Philbin for his handling of the Dolphins during the Richie Incognito imbroglio, but it was also tough not to hold Philbin accountable for allowing such a debacle to unfold on his watch. "I think he is going to have a hard time, but I like him," a GM said. "I think Philbin is a 1 in schematics and understanding and I like his personality. You like certain things about certain people. I think he is a real guy. I do not know that he necessarily commands real respect, and he is not a feared guy. He has not had enough success to be revered. He has to have success in order for his football to come through. He is almost the exact opposite of [Mike] Tomlin."

Don't know about that low.... sheesh

:idk:

Meh...I rank ESPN last in sports journalism myself.

Haha, so what they're saying is Mike Tomlin doesn't know football but he's respected by his team...somehow I think if football players know you don't know football you're not going to be respected. These guys don't know jack but they get people to pay for their "insider" stuff so I guess it serves their purpose.

So far Philbin's record has him middle of the pack so he has to turn that around and help people forget about bullygate which is the reason they claim his stock is low but it's ESPN so who cares.

When you look at Philbin’s 15-17 coaching record, that is near the middle of the pack. Philbin has won seven and eight games the past two seasons, which is better than most of the coaches listed in his range.

Seems about right. How he kept his job after last year is a mystery to me.

Ouch, under Marrone? I think most of the list is a joke, Philbin should higher but they have the Harbaughs at 8 & 9, Fisher at 11. It's an awful list but I do like that quote at the end of the write up on Philbin.

The part about 'exact opposite of Mike Tomlin' had me laughing.

So you say Joe doesn't try and cheat by running into players on the field mid play?

:chuckle:

I think Tomlin is a good coach but he is overrated. That man was handed the keys to a dynasty and he did make 2 SBs and win one but has only made playoffs 2 times since 2009.

I will never get the love the media has for Fisher......jeez what in his career has he done to get such admiration year in and year out?

I think he is a good coach but he is treated like he is a great one.

So let's get this straight. Last year the dithering #29 ranked Coach (with a depleated O-line and a hopeless GM) beat #1 ranked future HOF Coach (with the Greatest of all time QB) when Miami beat New England and we haven't got a chance to repeat in the opening game.

Even if you think Philbin should have known more about Bullygate, a good reporter woud note the change in the head coach this season. It's been a huge difference and widely reported

This list has more to do with public image and likeability than it does with actual coaching.

I'm not a complete Philbin-apologist, as I do attribute much of the coaching/scheme issues to him (after all he should have the final say)
but this guy has had A LOT to deal with from having Ireland as his GM for the past 2 years, a guy that if you ranked GM's, would definitely be bottom tier on that list.

The "opposite of Tomlin" comment is on the money IMO. Philbin may not be the best coach in the NFL, but the staff around him, including the owner, is seriously bottom-tier in terms of NFL-elite expertise.

I'm starting to wonder what might have been the reason we won that game against New England. We obviously have a terrible head coach, a bad QB, a suspect defense, an offensive offensive line, we had an awful offensive coordinator and a woeful GM. Yet we beat one of the best coach/QB combos in the game of football. How is that?!

If you listen to the media one would think, we went 0-16 last year without scoring a single touchdown...

How can you disagree? He was or is completely out of touch with his team last year, let the Oline explode last year, had no idea how big a mess things were. Kept mike Sherman around way to long. He deserves that rank.
