ESPN update on Ramsey and 4 potential trades

The latest on a potential Jalen Ramsey trade

Shortly before the Dolphins took the field for OTAs last week, coach Mike McDaniel declined to elaborate on Ramsey, whom the team decided to move on from in April.

"Nothing has changed," McDaniel said of the three-time first-team All-Pro. When asked for more details, McDaniel simply reiterated his focus was on the players who are on the field practicing.

Ramsey is likely to be traded before the regular season begins, despite signing a three-year, $72 million extension last September. General manager Chris Grier's decision to part ways with Ramsey points toward an off-field disconnect between team and player, considering Miami actively searched for a starting cornerback early in free agency.

The Dolphins sent tight end Hunter Long and a third-round pick to the Rams for Ramsey in 2023, so there won't likely be a massive trade deficit when a deal materializes. The larger issue is how much of Ramsey's $20.2 million in guaranteed salary will be covered by his new team. The Dolphins have already paid his $4 million roster bonus for 2025. -- Marcel Louis-Jacques, Dolphins reporter

Four hypothetical trade offers for Ramsey

i

Los Angeles Rams

Jeremy Fowler's offer:

  • Dolphins get: 2026 fifth-round pick, 2026 sixth-round pick, cash considerations
  • Rams get: Ramsey
Why this deal makes sense for both sides: This trade offer does not involve a premium pick in part because of the large sum of guaranteed money attached to Ramsey's contract in 2025. That $20.2 million has turned off some interested teams. But the Rams would cover at least $12 million of that in this scenario, helping Miami move on from a disgruntled player.

A Super Bowl-sized reunion makes sense for Ramsey, as the Rams have a big need on the outside and already know how to best use him.

i

Los Angeles Rams

Daniel Graziano's offer:

  • Dolphins get: 2026 seventh-round pick
  • Rams get: Ramsey
Why this deal makes sense for both sides: My feeling is Ramsey gets released rather than traded, but either way, I'd argue the Dolphins aren't going to get a ton for him. The Rams know and like Ramsey. He likes it in Los Angeles, too. So with this offer, it makes sense for the Rams to flip the pick they got from Baltimore in the Tre'Davious White deal.

i

Carolina Panthers

Ben Solak's offer:

  • Dolphins get: 2026 fourth-round pick
  • Panthers get: Ramsey
Why this deal makes sense for both sides: Ramsey is a fan of Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who coached him in Los Angeles, and the Panthers have a big need at safety opposite new addition Tre'von Moehrig. As the 30-year-old Ramsey enters the latter part of his career, safety might be a better position for him.

If he has the legs to play corner, starting roles on the outside and in the slot are up for grabs in Carolina. The team made huge additions across its defensive front this offseason but still needs help on the back end.

i

Los Angeles Chargers

Seth Walder's offer:

  • Dolphins get: 2027 seventh-round pick
  • Chargers get: Ramsey, 2027 sixth-round pick
Why this deal makes sense for both sides: The Chargers don't need Ramsey, but they have something some other teams don't: the cap room to absorb all of Ramsey's guarantees. The Chargers have a little less than $32 million in 2025 cap space but more than $118 million in 2026 cap space (the most in the NFL, per Roster Management System).

Ramsey, who would probably push free agent signing Donte Jackson into a backup role, would raise the defensive ceiling for a team that could easily become a true contender.

The verdict: Carolina's offer gives Miami the best asset

Considering the Dolphins gave up only a backup tight end (Long) and a third-round pick to acquire Ramsey in the first place, Solak's offer is the closest thing to breaking even in terms of draft capital. An additional fourth-round pick from Carolina gives Miami a whopping seven selections in the first four rounds of the 2026 draft, not including any compensatory picks.

That's more than enough capital to either stockpile young talent as the team continues to build its financial flexibility or put together a trade package for a difference-maker. Either way, a fourth-round pick is about as good a return as Miami could ask for.

Without Ramsey, the Dolphins would turn to fourth-year veteran Kader Kohou and former second-round pick Cam Smith. Grier has publicly put pressure on Smith to perform after two underwhelming seasons. -- Louis-Jacques

Ramsey to. Carolina lol

None of those returns make me interested in trading him over having him on the field and he was never going to return anything more than a late pick so the entire saga seems incredibly stupid as to why Grier even started it.

I think the benefit of that would be them eating his whole salary.

That could be worth more than a 7th rounder

What’s the benefit though? We don’t need the money, we are 13 million under already. We could literally keep him, let him rot all year then release him post June 1st and have the same cap savings, only difference would be an additional 10 million pre June 1st to use while saving draft capital.

It’s a stupid trade proposal that makes 0 sense. He’s still a solid player and probably still a pro bowler if moved to safety. Trading him to an inter conference team while losing draft capital only to receive 10 million that we won use makes 0 sense. We weren’t aggressive signing anyone when there were solid free agents available, doubtful do so now with any potential savings with leftover scraps and camp cuts available.

We always need money Seiler and Smith want raises, phillips and achane are going to want deals

The Eagles and Howie Roseman are always a model to follow when doing a deal. Look at the Bryce Huff deal they just did, they got a conditional 5th that can become a 4th if the underperforming Huff hits certain numbers. They also got Huff to restructure prior to the deal to make it more palatable for 49ers. Probably hard to expect Ramsey and Athletes First to be ultra cooperative in any restructuring, but if they really want to get outta town, and get to their preferred destination, then maybe something can get worked out. If I were a GM I'd be trying to copy anything Howie Roseman does.

He’s also spent 100s of millions of future cap dollars to compete now. A couple years ago he won 4 games and was trying to trade the farm for Russell Wilson and dump Jalen Hurts.

I was speaking specifically to his deal making prowess. Also, a guy that has two Lombardi's in the last 8 years is probably doing a whole lot more right than wrong, surely we can agree on that ?

Agreed. I don't want a bag of peanuts for one of our best players. He signed an extension. He's under contract. He doesn't want to play? Fine, lose a year of your prime. He wants to turn himself into a locker room cancer? Suspend his ass for conduct detrimental to the team and he can not play and not get paid. Play ****ing hard ball. Send a message.

This. This. This.

We don’t. Sieler is under contract for 2 more seasons and is already accounting for sizable deals. He’s as simple as adding a few million into each year which we can do either way or you can do like the eagles do and simple add void years towards end of the contract.

Jonnu will be 31 by the start of next offseason not giving him anything either way no matter how much money they have.

Too early to tell on Phillips and achane is ineligible for a new deal until after this year and who knows how Philips will look. Either way there’s money available for both once you move on from tyreek via cut or trade before march 12th of next offseason. You can also have that same money available by moving on from Ramsey post June 1st next offseason while saving losing proposed draft capital.

More luck than anything. First Super Bowl mostly players drafted by Andy Reid, especially the important players.

Don’t forget he had a run of bust after bust in the first and second round after he was tasked with rebuilding the roster. Most notably taking Jalen Reagor one pick before some guy named Justin Jefferson.

Drafted Andre Dillard in the first round right before that. He’s been very fortunate. And when things weren’t going his way he proceeded to spends 100s of millions of dollars in future cap dollars to compete now.

He’s made GREAT trades but I chalk his success up to pure luck more GM prowess. Even Saquan Barkley going there was lucky, as he wanted to stay in NY and/or sign with the Bears, who wouldn’t pony up the money. So Saquan decided to sign with the team closest to his home in Whitehall, Pa, a team he actually hated growing up. But had a great OL.

Jordan Mailata was a grand slam 7th round pick but really that was just a shot in the dark, ya he can have the credit but I would never trust him to take over a bad franchise and think he’s capable or rebuilding it.

He’s the ultimate blind squirrel finding a nut.

His trades saved his ass though, he came out way ahead on those. And Russell Wilson refusing to go there, imagine how different history would’ve been if Philly sent those 3 first round picks to Seattle and dumped Jalen Hurts, like Howie wanted to do. I think that’s why Hurts always seems to have a chip on his shoulder.

The Eagles will be paying massive amounts on players who will be long gone, down the road. The strategy paid off though.

Ya he drafted Jalen Carter, a year after drafting like five other Georgia players who are largely busts.

But let’s not pretend this guy is special and could rebuild a bad team into a contender with his scouting ability.
