I'm really rooting for Donald Lee. I just watched a tape of the Jaguar game and his commitment to dirtywork blocking is remarkable. Plus he's very skilled at all variety of blocks, not merely straight ahead blocking or seal blocking. Frankly, the posters who rip him incessantly have no clue about the non-glamorous aspects of the TE position and probably have never actually watched Lee block play after play.
The wild card is our new staff and scheme. If Linehan were the head coach I'm confident he would oust Lee in favor of a pantyhose TE. Saban prefers more muscle and may have enough down the road foresight to keep Donald Lee.
In the old days, circa '70s, it would be simple to put 20-30 pounds on Lee and make him a tackle. The Steelers did that with a blocking force TE named Larry Brown who had far less receiving skills than Donald Lee and it turned out great for them. But these days the size gap is too enormous and you can't pretend a smaller framed guy can handle the big and fast DEs. We found that out with Wade Smith.
