Settle QB position
The new coach shouldn't necessarily feel tethered to Daunte Culpepper, even though the Dolphins paid him a $7 million signing bonus last year after acquiring him from Minnesota for a 2006 second-round draft choice.
A source said the Dolphins would actually save $1.3 million against the NFL's $109 million salary cap by releasing Culpepper, who is set to earn $5.6 million in base salary next season with a $6.9 million cap number.
The Dolphins, though, would have to carry $5.6 million in "dead money" toward a player no longer on the roster. The "dead money" comes from the acceleration of prorated signing bonus the Dolphins gave Culpepper into their salary cap.
The Dolphins would have the option of taking that entire $5.6 million hit in 2007 or accepting a split of $1.4 million in 2007 and $4.2 million in 2008, the source said.
Unlike in previous seasons, the Dolphins wouldn't have to wait until after June 1 to release Culpepper to trigger the split thanks to a rule change when the Collective Bargaining Agreement was extended last March. Saban said earlier this month the Dolphins were projected to enter this offseason with between $12 million and $15 million in cap room.
