Why would Ross extend Philbin's contract for two more years (by adding two years to the existing remaining one year) when Ross had all of the leverage? If the Dolphins were trying to find a new defensive coordinator I could understand extending Philibin to show stability to a possible top replacement, but since they are not getting a new defensive coordinator extending Philbin for two years is stupid. Why not revise Philibin's contract for one year (which is what is left on his current contract) with team options for the 2nd and 3rd years? That way if Philibin fails, they can fire him after next season without owing him more money. If Philibin doesn't except this, then tell him he will be fired. Philibin would likely never get a chance to be a head coach again if he were fired since he has under achieved, so he would have to accept the revised contract to continue being a head coach. For a billionaire, I really don't think that Ross negotiates very well.

I don't think most coaches would sign year to year deal like that. Sprano did cuz he knew he was on outs anyway. Philbin still has a chance to shine next year. Why would he not bet on himself when his team has improved each year.

Simple answer: Ross is extending Philbin's contract because hes a bad owner.

No where is it written that coaches have to be extended before they enter their last year. The Cowboys didn't extend Garrett and he had his most impressive season. If Philbin is really worth his chops then being in the last year of his deal shouldnt be a problem. If he lets it become a problem, then he isnt worth keeping anyways.

All this move does is send yet another reminder to the locker room that coaches get a benefit of the doubt the players do not. Cant see how that will backfire at all.

Ross doesn't want Philbin to worry that there might be some accountability attached to his job.

Ross thinks he is creating job security to try and lure in free agents is my guess. Nobody is buying it though.

Or maybe Ross just is just as weak as Philbin is, and wants to pay him some extra cash because he knows full well there is no way he can justify keeping Philbin beyond next season when the entire thing caves in around Philbin and we finish last in the division. You can not expect a weak coach to lead a group of men in a professional sport, and expect to win championships, or expect to even get close.
