For a team that made the playoffs, Miami has a lot of holes. Going into free agency, how do you approach this?

Do you bring in a really good, pro-bowl type player like a Callais Campbell and solve defensive end in a big, big way. Or instead do you look for 2-3 serviceable starters at manageable salaries?

The Dolphins have done it both ways. I think the team made the right move to get N. Suh when he was available. Certainly, Suh hasn't disappointed. Last year, Miami plugged holes with mostly serviceable guys (Maxwell, Branch etc.) and that worked pretty well.

Thoughts?

This is very easy. The approach should be KISS-keep It Simple Stupid. Don't over spend, don't overreach ie draft and please if isnot broken don't try to fix it. Concentrate on two areas of the team to improve. Be it Oline and LBacking core and just do it.

2 lbs and 2 Ols will go along way to fix this team. As long as we resign some of our FAs. The only problem is I am afraid of Tannembaum's "overreaching".
This guy may pull a Jeff Ireland and try to rebuild what isn't broken. Either way, God help us!

I am not sure what kind of contract Zach Brown from Buffalo would command but I would like to see us land one of the top guards in FA and Brown. Maybe a few depth players after those two but use the draft for another LB in the first 2 rounds then TE or DE in the first two rounds. I think quality signings of Guard and LB before the draft allows more flexibility to draft BPA if a player like Howard is there for us in the first round at a position of lesser need.

I've always noticed and been on the record saying getting solid interior lineman in FA is always available and always works. For whatever reason, mid tier guards are always picked up in FA for reasonable contracts and when plugged into an OL that has some talent, completely solidify those lines. We need consistency and players that can play every snap. Continuity on the OL is so underrated - and also why I am not a fan of keeping both Pouncey and Albert.

ps: There is nothing serviceable about Maxwell's contract. He's getting paid like an upper tier #1 CB which he definitely is not.

8 million a year isn't upper tier pay. Soon is contract will appear average

I would sign a top guard and draft one in the middle rounds to start next year, sign some good young depth, players, and the build the defense though the draft,

Before restructuring coming into this season, he was approx the 10th highest paid CB. After restructuring, he was, I believe the 16th highest paid CB in the NFL. Spin that however you want, facts show he is being paid as top 16 CB in the NFL and he's more like a top 50.

I'd like to see us go after a couple of solid guards in FA then go after lbs in the 1st & 2nd rounds of the draft.

You go serviceable starter in free agency. You have to overpay stars

But Miami wasn't on the hook for any bonus money . . . That is huge.

So even if he was being paid as an above average #1, Miami's cap isn't suffering like they are the ones that paid him a free agent contract of a above average #1.

Now the Houston CB, he'll attack a teams cap like a bonafide top 5 CB this offseason.

We should fill all obvious needs with mid tier reasonably priced fa then draft bpa in draft. Drafting and reaching for need is one of the main reasons we have not been successful for so long. You get in a real bind counting on rookies to play big roles right away. If they can play immediately great and we have depth if not they can sit and learn til ready.

I would try to add Ingram and Stills as probably our most pricey free agent pieces. Possibly guard as well, just depends how things fall out. From there- resign a few others of our own for decent deals. Then in the draft get a MLB in the first or second round. Get a TE somewhere in the draft too. Find a pass rusher to develop late maybe and as much secondary / lb talent we can to develop

Also I think you have to consider cutting Albert. Not saying it is a must because it means we have to find another guard at that point and it diminishes solid LT depth BUT if you look at how we can make the Dolphins a better overall football team you look at where that money could be allocated. SF talked about Campbell in FA...that could be more valuable for us to fill a DE need and use Albert's salary on Campbell while still going after one of the top guards and Zach Brown.

Agreed about the oline, no comment at Maxwell's contract.
