What about D'onta Hightowner and Dre kirkpatrick? Two former Bama guys, both still young. Both highly respected by Gase's former boss. Could transform this defense and give us two young leaders to build this defense around for years to come.

That's a big NO on a high priced FA CB. Especially in the deepest CB draft in 20 years. We only really need a nickel CB so later rounds for that, IMO. Hightower....maybe.

So I don't see spending that kind of money on Hightower. I'm in the minority that thinks he isn't going to be as good away from New England. Dre Kirkpatrick is intriguing, and played with Burke under the VJ system at Cincinnati and had success. So, there's a natural fit, and he's a young guy who fits the physical mold. But like Eesti, I think the money may be too much to make that work. I don't see the money working either for those people who want to cut Maxwell to do it. So, while an interesting idea, I don't see us actually moving for any high end veteran CB's.

If we were going to pay money, I'd go after Stephon Gilmore first. He's a young stud who is only going to improve. In the draft I really like Sidney Jones ... that guy is phenomenally smooth and despite his spindly look, he tackles and is durable.

Personally, I think we're looking at guards and lower level free agents. If Deandre Levy becomes available I'd look at him. But I think we're looking at OG's, DE's and DT's almost exclusively among non-bargain FA's.

1. Hightower
2. Hightower
3. Hightower

If we're going to spend big on one player it needs to be a player that is capable of transforming our garbage ass defense. Hightower will QB this defense and take it to new heights. Plug in a first and second round pick, as well as some second and third tier free agents and watch the huge turnaround.

We will be fine plugging in two mid tier guards.

I would like those moves, that would have to cause us to cut Maxwell though to keep some money for guard

We have 42 million in cap space right now and still can free up more. Why does everyone think that adding those two players will take up 42 million in cap space?

There is not 1 player that is going to transform our defense. We need to improve quality at 5 positions on defense. DE, DT, SLB, WLB, NCB

Did a lot of thinking about FA/our needs and I think this is the best course of action to take...

Let Stills, Branch, and Sims walk. Hit Kiko with the low tender ($1.6/1.8M).

Larry Warford 5yr/45M
Marquise Goodwin or Aldrick Robinson. Sign one for around 2yrs/4M
Fasano 1yr/2M

Brandon Williams 4yr/42M
Zach Brown 4yr/26M ...or spend a little less on Gerald Hodges, like 4yr/20M...
Jabaal Sheard 3yr/20M
DJ Swearinger 2yr/10M
Sam Shields 2yr/10M

2 big deals, 2 mid deals, and 4 small deals. As you can see most of the money gets dedicated to the defense. By my math we're looking at a combined $35 Millon cap hit for all these guys, but I'm also cutting IAQ (Jun 1), Misi, Maxwell, and Jordan, which means even after these signings we'd have around $23 million left over.

Then in the draft target DE, LB and OG in the first three rounds.

I don't mean transform our defense from trash to top 5, and I also stated that we would still need more acquisitions after Hightower. It's all in the text you quoted. Regardless of what you add to the defensive unit, having that one blue chip addition makes a huge difference. We need a difference maker. He'd be that.

sign Brandon Williams, tender Kiko
Draft Charles Harris, TJ Watt, Corn Elder

done!

First moves, extend Landry and Jones. If Miami has roughly $42 million to spend, that might be in the $23-25 range right there.

Then look for emerging talent at low to mid-priced range. Something like this:

Klein, MLB
Logan, DT
Goodwin, Wr
Leary, G (my one splurge)
Warmack, G

I would let Stills go if his price tag is as advertised. I also think Branch could end up in the 9-10 million range, which is too high for what is really a situational guy.

With the guard spot taken care of in free agency, I'd go defense almost exclusively in the draft. Get two pass rushers with those first two picks, one at linebacker and one defensive end.

I like the idea of Brandon Williams next to N. Suh with Phillips in the rotation. This is not a strong draft for DT's and Miami needs to at least get some depth there.

Like when we added Ndamulkong Suh?

I'm not saying it won't help to add a blue chipper. I'm just saying you can't leave gaping holes at other spots....and we have a lot.
