Lets discuss some strategies! One that I just thought of now is...

Draft 4-6 elite closers early. They are GOLD for trading. The demand is so high for good closers once the season starts, people will give alot for them. Example: Get a guy like Baez, whos stock is extremely high now, and in a few months he'll be nothing. I actually drafted Gagne and got Baez for insurance, its working out so far.

Have an open spot on your roster so you can pick up and start a pitcher whos pitching the next day. This doesn't always work. The pitcher has to be going against a bad team, and it has to be a good pitcher. If its overused, it kills ERA and whip.
Example: Any Detroit or Brewer pitcher is good, inconsistant, but good, they'll be on free agents for sure.

These might be case by case things, in which case, dont listen to anything i say(which i doubt people will do anyways lol).

Theres more that I just intuitively do that I cant think of.

It depends on format of the league. In a Roto style league closers are necessary because all the stats have a high value for the stat leader and a low value which will affect your standing.

In Pts based leagues like CBSSportsline or 1 of the Yahoo formats closer are a clearly distinct advantage. For ex., we had a a pay league in this format last year where closers got 10 pts for a save and starters got 10 for a win. Innings, K's, ER, hits were among the stats that pitchers were added or docked for. On the surface SP's had a distinct advantage because they accumulate massive innings pitched and a healthy amount of K's in many cases. But they also allow a proportionate amount of hits, walks, and ER. Two teams, the championship team (me) and the runner up invested heavily in closers and were laughed at when teams looked at our starting staffs. While some teams had Peavy's and Pedro's I had Wagner, Rivera and Wickman and my dawg, the runner up Panch, had Street, Hoffman and Nathan. The biggest reasons I won were because I found the difference maker on waivers in midseason when Felix Hernandez was called up and during championship week Rivera, Wagner and Wickman lit up the save department. The rest of our staffs was made up of Danny Haren's, John Pattersons and Brett Myers types who were finds in late rds and waivers. The deciding factor in determining closers value in that which was much of the league missed was that while starters can accumulate 20-30 pts a good outing, often they only pitch once a week. Conversely a closer can pitch as much as 4-6 x a week and simply obliterate even an Ace SP like Peavy or Pedro.

In a straight head to head format like Yahoo which is categorically based its best to let other people reach early for closers and invest heavily in hitting and good depth in SP. Closers arent really a heavy need because at worst its 1 stat you will lose. So you take lower tier closers and upper tier Sps that can more heavily impact WHip era, wins and k's. Occassionally you find a lower tier closer like a Turnbow on waivers and he makes himself into an upper tier guy by seasons end. Closers change so frequently its difficult yo determine who to choose, but with lower tier closers in this format you venture so little that whats there to lose? Just find a good closer on a bad team not a guy who will balloon your era like a jose mesa.

Wow, please no one do that strategy... It's awful... Sorry man, but that's bad news waiting to happen. People won't trade ofr Closers if one player has them all. I mean, you'll win 2-3 pitching stats and 0 for everything else.

The key to FB is...

1). Pay attention to F.A. Be the guy who grabs the hot players. If they stay hot, you got a lot for nothing. If not, dump them. The trade possibilities are endless.

2). Draft WELL. Pay attention to who got hot last year. I've always led the way (not really so much this year, but the season is early) in drafting talent in the 8-12 rounds that go in the 1st next season. Johan Santana a few years ago in the 9th, and last year Andruw Jones in the 11th and Mark Buehrle in round 12. Pay attention... This year I think Bonderman (not so far) has a chance to do some things. Jason Marquis as well (a GREAT 5th pitcher who'll get 12-15 wins. Not great for K's and average for ERA with 4ish. Hopefully he drops it down. Also, Roger Clemens is major this year. He's 1st round talent, who goes in the 10th rounds. IF he comes back, it's the steal of the draft. If not, well that sucks. But he's coming back, I believe. It's like he's on the DL for a month...

My drafts look like this...

Round 1- Position player
Round 2- Position player
Round 3- Position player

You should have 3 offensive powerhouses.

Round 4- Closer (Rivera in every round 4 for me this year)
Round 5- Closer
Round 6- Pitcher
Round 7- Pitcher

This is the core of the team. Rounds (I do yahoo...) 8-21 are for finding gems and building the rest of the team.

Also, if you get the 1st or 2nd pick (A-rod and Pujols) don't be afraid to trade them... They're going to put huge numbers, but you also can build a more balanced team by trading them.

This is how I do it... I've been in the finals every year with atleast one team (Usually two)

this is my first year playing but i kno this is a helpful hint

if a guys team name is washington nationals

and you have alfanso soriano you could get more for him then a non national fan

by the way, Im talking about a head to head, Yahoo format. I dont know anything about the point system way...

But theres only 30 starting closers at any time. Divide that by 12 teams, and some people are getting screwed. If you don't draft at least 2-3 solid RPs, all you can hope for is injuries, so that you can pick up the backup starting closers. But that only lasts for a limited amount of time, you might as well forget that category all together, which is still not good. Theres a few cases where the backup takes over, like Worrell or Palpabon, but thats 2 out of 30.

Closers pitch 3-4 times a week. Because of that they help era and whip greatly, plus saves. And when facing a team with good closers, the opponent can school you in those three categories.

Personally, I dont really care about saves, lol. I know I can win without saves, until the playoffs. Once the playoffs start, I'll have gagne(whos on my DL).

Your team is good, its only been two weeks, rankings dont mean much. In one of my leagues I was second to last after the first week...in the second week I whupped the 1st place guy. BUT you have some useless guys like pena and crosby. You can easily dump those guys and get some better pitchers. Some sleeper pitchers are Marquis, Verlander, Lidle. O and when Nate Robertson is pitching at night, pick him up lol.

i wanted to get ray from baltimore but i was a little late:rolleyes:

if you need a closer, keep your eye on Hermanson. Hes injured now, but when he comes back, he'll be the closer of the white sox. You should wait like a day before he comes back to pick him up, no one even notices him.
