Do you think we would be smart enough to sign a vet to start for us next year and sit our 1st round pick for a year to learn the system inside and out? Would you be ok with the signing of Orton, Campbell, Grossman, Young and sitting our 1st round pick whoever that may be so he can learn something like what Rogers did with Farve.

It depends on who it is. If we draft Andrew Luck, he starts right away. Anyone else should sit behind a vet.

It depends on the vet, too. How much can a guy learn watching the vets you listed prepare for and play in games? A future hall of famer like favre had a little more to offer a rookie.

It's really more of a Hasselbeck / Locker situation.

If I can get a guy like Hasselbeck, I grab him. What are Orton or Young going to teach a guy like Luck, not much. I'd stick with Moore if that were the case.

After that, you let training camp and preseason play out.

I have no problem with sitting Luck for part of the season. He may be great in the PAC10(12?) but this is the NFL. I'm not going to throw the kid on the field just to make fans happy. Marino sat on the bench for six games behind Woodley.

Agree with Sebas - anyone other than Luck should sit, or being thrown to the wolves will potentially hurt their development. If Ireland is still around, I have an inkling that Palmer will become a Phin. But who knows which vets might be available...

Part of it depends on how much a new coach/regime wants to blow up what we have. It's hard to say this season since every player has regressed and nobody is trying. So are guys like Davis or Dansby bums or are they just not playing to their full potential? If the new coach/regime decides we actually do have a talented team, immediate success will be more likely with a vet under center.

I think we have a few seasons of rebuilding so I'd start a rookie right away kind of like Newton or Dalton this year. Unless of course of offensive line is still this pathetic and we have to worry about our young qb getting murdered.

Man i would start any rookie QB we get in the first round........we cant get as bad as we are now again.

well for one we dont have a hall of fame QB vet for our rookie to sit behind for 3 years so that analogy isnt accurate at all.... i would say its closer to mcnabb/ponder... where the rookie will take over mid sieason... but if we get luck or jones, i'd like to see him start right away

why do people keep on whating to sign Orton? Heck Let's sign McNabb too... I am sure he will be availble.

Yea...Orton was supposed to be our savior this year...and well...yea...he sucks...but Im guessing he is STILL a million times better than Henne....

The whole "mentor" thing is a bit overrated. If the QB has the stuff, it will eventually come out. Favre, btw, was an awful mentor. Rodgers had to learn everything on his own basically. It did give him some time to get used to NFL game speed and to learn the playbook, and there's definitely value in that. Luck is pro-ready right now. Who knows with Barkley or Jones. I guess we really wouldn't know until August.
