Media members who cover the Miami Dolphins rarely have seen Michael Thomas without a smile on his face since he joined the team in December of 2013.
The defensive back, who has become a solid NFL player after being undrafted following his career at Stanford University and then spent almost two full seasons on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad, is grateful for the opportunity to play football for a living.
It’s something he doesn’t take for granted, particularly since he and his wife Gloria became parents last July.
When Father’s Day comes around Sunday, Thomas will be enjoying the day as a dad for the first time, and he says having a child has changed the way he views the game.
“It gave me more perspective,” Thomas said. “It lets you really realize what’s important to you. Now, every day it’s not just getting up because I love the game, because I want to be great at it. Now I’m doing it because I’ve got somebody to support, too. When somebody truly depends on you for everything, it does something different to you. Right now, I just feel like more grounded, more humble knowing that I’ve got somebody I’ve got to support every day.
“It gives you a different perspective like, OK, this is what really matters. This is what’s really important. You’re going to think about that bad practice if you have a couple of bad plays, but at the end of the day, this is what really matters and that’s at home.”
Genesis Thomas was born July 10, 2014. Michael says he will be flying to Houston to celebrate her first birthday with his extended family.
Since Genesis was born, Michael says he’s found himself spending more time with the other fathers on the Dolphins roster.
He also has talked parenthood frequently in recent weeks with linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, who missed the first practice of the minicamp to attend the birth of his daughter.
