At 10:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, the FCC will vote on scuttling the blackout rule, which prevents games from being televised in the home team’s market if the non-premium tickets aren’t fully sold within 72 hours of kickoff.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and U.S. Representative Brian Higgins (D-N.Y.) will conduct a conference call in advance of the vote. Blumental, Higgins, and Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) introduced legislation in 2013 that would strip the NFL of its broadcast antitrust exemption unless the blackout rule is dumped.

Hmm... I always thought this was a league mandated policy. It'll be interesting if the league forces the broadcasters to continue the black out rule via contract, and whether it would pass antitrust scrutiny. The NHL (and I believe MLB) does something similar where the league forces individual teams to only enter into television deals that broadcasts their games in their local territory. It's why that even if NESN became available in New York, Bruins games would be blacked out in New York. This system is coming under scrutiny by one federal judge on antitrust grounds who ruled that the case should go to trial. However, it's the same judge that ruled that the age floor for the NFL draft violated the antitrust laws in the Maurice Clarrett case, which was overturned on appeal.

FCC unanimously dumps blackout rule

How do you think this will effect the Miami games on TV?

ProfootballTalk says that they may still black out the games with the Networks
and the NFL agreeing to do so despite the FCC ruling...

Probably not much, doesn't ross usually kick in when needed? I don't recall any blacked out games for the longest

I bet Ross will not buy anymore tickets I wouldn't if I was him.

I don't know. I can't stand ross but he is known for buying them when needed for the fans so I do appreciate that! I wonder how much money he's spent buying tickets from his own team??? Haha

Ross has done a great job in this regard. Also, many times it is local advertisers chipping in big bucks to allow their product to be shown on Phins games.

FCC unanimously dumps blackout rule

if Ross wants to boost PR, he buys the seats and donates them to SoFla youth football orgs, youth groups, displaced kids/families and church groups

Huzienga used to do the same thing to keep a blackout from happening. The whole blackout thing is stupid. I have never made a decision not to go to a game because it was on TV. I also have never decided that damn the game is not on TV let me go spend a 100 dollars or so to go see it

i need them to change the jacksonville over miami in orlando problem

i need them to change the jacksonville over miami in orlando problem

In Lakeland that was quite irritating or the stupid we cant show a doubleheader on both networks for some stupid reason

Bummy the dummy strikes again with his arbitrary ruling from on high. LOL

lets see can you move ones I wrote earlier in the year too?

I bet you can if you try. LOL

Nope. That was another staff member that caught this one. But since you seem to enjoy your attacks, perhaps you'll enjoy your time off from the site.

See ya later.

Tom Wheeler, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, indicated Tuesday that the FCC may begin fining broadcasters for saying the Washington Redskins name on air.

The FCC recently received a petition from John Banzhaf III, a legal activist and George Washington University professor, calling on the agency to strip a Washington, D.C., radio station of its broadcasting license for using the name, according to Reuters.

“We’ll be looking at that petition, we will be dealing with that issue on the merits and we’ll be responding accordingly,” Wheeler said during a conference with reporters, according to Reuters.

“There are a lot of names and descriptions that were used over time that are inappropriate today,” he said. “And I think the name that is attributed to the Washington football club is one of those.”

Several media outlets have already instituted their own self censorship policies on the name Redskins, including the Washington Post and Washington Business Journal.

NFL announcers Tony Dungy of ABC and Phil Simms of CBS have also pledged not to use the name on air.
