Please hear this right off the bat: I LOVE THIS TEAM AND HAVE FOR MANY YEARS AND WILL FOR MANY TO COME! But…
If there is anything these years of fin-fandom have taught me, and many of you, is that inconsistency has been a hallmark of this team since the end of the ’72 season. So while I’m enjoyin the hell outta these wins and the passion that’s seems to be inspiring them, I must council my fluttering heart to slow down a little, and I must take a deep breath.
With the many seasons of past … ups and downs, I think the old axiom of even-headedness applies here. Don’t let yourself get too low when things are going poorly, but also don’t let yourself get too high when things are going well. Well right now I’m afraid of heights.
Inconsistency is a slippery animal. How can a team can be a laughing-stock for the first half of a season, and then simply, seemingly at the snapping of fingers, seem to be able to give the best teams in the NFL a run for their money? Many, in such a situation, will point out, reasonably, ‘a bad offensive line that simply solidified.’ Or a Pro Bowl caliber QB looks horrible, ‘well that’s because of an injury.’ And his replacement looks like a rookie, ‘well that’s because new system, not practicing with first team and after all he’s improving with every game.’ We’re all familiar with the scenario: ‘Is this team after so many years finally gelling, or is it simply a bunch players that have talent but lack the intangibles necessary to be great?’
Lord, please let it be the former!
But as for me, until these boys have rings on their fingers I’m cautious of heights, after falling from them so many times.
