FearTheBeard's Complete Offseason Plan - 2014 Edition (Warning very long...)

Beard - One of our biggest needs on the team is leadership, particularly in the O-line room. In your additions do you have a good strong leader? If we haven't got one, we might need to be finding a future leader in the Draft (like Zach Martin). If your conclusion is that Pouncey is the answer in O-line leadership, that scares the hell out of me and I don't know much about Veldheer.
Many fans will just look at the game skills of the prospective players, but after the mess that we went through, it's a pretty sure bet that we will need to find a decent O-line team leader. It's one of our biggest priorities.

It was something I would've liked to have worked in...I was thinking a guy on the vet minimum like Wade Smith but just didn't end up fitting in. Pouncey wants to make money, I think you see him take a leadership role and it's still being overblown a bit, as long as we have strong leaders in the locker room we should be fine. You have anyone in mind?

Do you see the Fins getting anything for Daniel Thomas or Jonathan Martin or are they just straight cuts?

Martin could fetch a late rounder somehow, DT's getting the axe.

Classy response

I was asked to provide constructive criticism for a guy who posted something that is completely his own opinion. Who am I to criticize someone Else's opinion?

I'm by no means required to write why I disagreed with his opinions, I was short on free time and decided to post something instead of nothing.

If I came off sarcastically I apologize to the OP that wasn't my intention.

Love the thought and analysis. Thanks.

Unfortunately, my opinions vary considerably from your plan. Last offseason you suggested letting Jake Long walk ... I made it clear that letting Long and Fasano go would wreck our pass protection and run blocking. It did. The thing that most concerns me is that this year you suggest letting Paul Soliai walk ... and it's almost the same thing on the other side of the ball. We lose our run defense without Soliai, and no, I do not think Joseph is nearly as good. That needs to be addressed, IMHO.

Our vision of the draft differs considerably. With the exception of Easley, I don't think I would be happy with drafting any of those guys. IMHO, we shouldn't draft a LB in round 1 or a QB in round 5. Too much talent in this draft to waste what could be good contributors. I do like Fales, but Philbin doesn't like questionable arm strength guys, so I just don't see it. The OL and RB you drafted just don't seem good enough for those spots to me. The TE is a good idea in the 7th round, but I just can't see any picks I like in that draft. IMHO, we don't solve our OL woes with those guys and we skip taking a lot of serious difference makers. :(

We do agree on a few FA's. Monroe and Veldheer in particular would be exceptionally good fits for us. Asamoah would also be a good addition.

Love the analysis, and your presentation is always well done. While we often agree on things, this time we see them differently. Regardless, it gives us lots of wonderful food for thought during these long football-less months. Thanks for a well put together offseason take.

Haha we're not gonna agree, I haven't been on the same page with you at all this offseason. Linval is definitely valuable, if not more than Soliai. You're either underrating him or overrating our 2-down plugger. Last year I still had Vollmer, Jake inevitably got injured and he's was just too risky at a premium. To the Linval point, there's plenty of better options at DT than big Paul, he isn't all that while I like him. I'd be curious as to who you'd target in the draft, can't see our OL not being set. I'd be curious as to what your offseason would look like. Thanks for the input.

What exactly sticks out as a weakness? Seems like most of my bases are covered...could've upgraded TE but couldn't fit it in. The RB I took was as a KR more than anything. The beauty with Mosley is if you draft him you can cut Ellerbe and Wheeler and then just need to find one LB and save a ton of money. He'd bring leadership to the defense too and we need a natural leader.

Great read
1- if Moseley is sitting there at 19 I'm running to the podium and drafting him. I agree with you on Moseley.
2- big Paul is not worth big contract but you need to replace him w someone immediately becuz he was the only run stopper we had in my opinion. I would like to keep Paul but only if signed to a decent contract.
3- here's my idea for the ol, not sure if there's a great center in fa this yr or in the draft but if there was I would bring in the center , move pouncey to left guard and go from there. Obviously I agree with you on signing the Lt you mentioned.
4- mjd no question in my opinion would be an instant upgrade to our running game. He's flying under the radar but I believe he's wants to play for a sb contender. Denver, pats, sf etc might all try to sign him. He can still play at a high level. If mjd signs with us I would be very excited.

Great write up.

Definitely on the same page there. As far as the Pouncey move i support it, although unlikely. We can look at Evan Dietrich-smith as an option...you come away asking is a combo of Asamoah and Pouncey better, or EDS and Pouncey. I like the first pairing better, Weston Richburg is an intriguing option in the 3rd round as well.

If we could get Vel for 6 mill I wouldn't be mad, I guess.....

Asamoah would definitely be my first target in free agency.

Constructive Criticism helps the OP and allows him to look at things differently. It's not a negative thing that offends anybody. He posted it on a forum to get responses from people and to get people's opinions on it. There's a difference between "I think this is crap, you're a horrible poster" and "I really don't think Mosley would be the better choice over Martin if both of them were to be there, Maybe we should be looking at Smallwood instead in the 2nd?"

And if you're not comfortable doing that, that's fine. It's just that the simple "Nope." seemed like more of a selfish response and just seemed like you just didn't want to help the OP any. If you would've said something like "Well I'm short on time and I'm not really comfortable doing that, sorry." I think people would've been more understanding and wouldn't have felt like you were being sarcastic.

I don't see CJ Mosley making that long. Love the pick, but I think he is too good not to go top 15. Hard to tell how far Easley drops. He was a first rounder before the injury. Tank Carradine tore his ACL almost 2 months later into the season than Easley and still went in the 30's. I think Brandon Thomas at #50 is too rich for my blood. I have Su'a-Filo, and Gabe Jackson graded higher. I really like David Fales a lot. He's my #5 QB. Also like the Linval Joseph signing a lot.

Also not sure if Ryan Harris is an upgrade over Clabo, albeit he is a better fit for the scheme.

When you gotta replace so much of the line, Harris just seems like a target that makes sense. Nothing special, but knows the scheme and can step in. I'm plenty open to Strief too but is gonna be more expensive and I drafted Brandon Thomas who could slide over to RT if one of the guards emerges. I don't think Easley will get there...he's too talented, I also considered Donte Moncrief at that spot. I have Sua-Filo higher too, but I think he's a first rounder so I couldn't slot him in at #50 because to be honest I think he's more in play at 19 than 50. Gabe Jackson isn't a scheme fit, I have them both ranked higher too.
