I think the interest is real, but their character concerns are real too. Last year Mike Nolan watched as Miami and Philadelphia both took lead interests in Manuel Wright last year, much like how Miami & San Fran have taken lead interests in Ahmad Brooks this year.
The outcome there was that Miami patiently waited until the 5th round and picked Wright up based on our high selection order (there were a lot of 5th round picks submitted). Wright showed up overweight, cried on tape, struggled in preseason, and only played a handful of snaps when Traylor got hurt. The league perception is surprisingly that Miami may have gotten BURNED by the Wright selection (they'll change their tune after 2006 trust me).
If I had to guess, I'd say that San Fran plans to do the same thing this time around except in the 4th round. They might flinch and burn a 3rd, but they have 2 fourth round picks so I think they'll try and get away with burning a 4th.
If Miami burns a 2nd, I can virtually guarantee that Ahmad Brooks is ours. If we choose to burn a 3rd, we run a significant chance that San Fran or Green Bay do the same and take him based on selection order...and a more miniscule chance that somehow Dallas ends up with higher selection order than us and they burn a 3rd on him. Outside of those teams, the other teams interested are guaranteed to have lower picks than us because they made the playoffs.
Green Bay has been spending an awful lot of time looking at Berryman and Dixon lately...which to me means they could be trying to fake teams out of burning a 2nd rounder on Brooks.
