Just when you thought the dead of summer would suck the football life out of us completely, John Clayton (of all people) comes out with a terrific article about 10 current trends in the NFL.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/columns/clayton_john/1575845.html

Its interesting to note that the Phins do not fit in with many of these trends. Not necesarrily a bad thing, just worth mentioning after reading the article.

On the contrary...

Issue number 1- The dolphins benefited from this trend in acquiring a pro bowl safety on the cheap..

Issue number 2- Jamar Fletcher mentioned in the article.

Issue number 3-Two classes evolving ? Yes, after last season it seems the Dolphins only have second class citizenship in terms of the issue.

Issue number 4-Jay Fiedler was coaching before playing in the NFL. I betcha Bernie Parmalee could still suit up for special teams.

Issue number 5-We drafted a center in 2001 so it doesn't fit.

Issue number 6-Donnie Edwards moves from right outside linebacker at UCLA to middle linebacker to the Chiefs. Then is acquired by the Chargers who move Seau to the outside and Seau becomes expendable

Issue number 7 - Ricky.....We look Good :D

Issue number 8 - Didn't we just resign a guy due to his pass catching and blocking ability ? I believe his contract was...
2003 530000.00
2004 750000.00
2005 900000.00
2006 1020000.00

Issue number 9- TimBo isn't getting any younger..

Issue number 10-The Dolphins have been a model of cap management. Name another team with that many pro bowlers ?

Yep...We fit the mold..

But he doesnt fit the trend of signing speedier safeites. Knights an old school safety, albeit a good one.

The Eagles had 9 pro bowlers and were $10M under the 2003 salary cap at 5/29/03. I think that includes their $100M QB but not the $42M Dawkins. Many think that there F.O. is the best at managing the cap.
