Been pretty busy with military committments so I am a little delayed on my posting of thoughts on our draft.

Was a big fan of day one last year and was fairly excited about our prospects this year.

I will list my opinion of our pick, who was available and who I feel we should have taken.

Needs going into draft
1-CB
2-Wr
3-DT
4-OL depth
5-OLB
6- Te
7-RB
8-ILB

Round One Pick 25.
Our definate biggest need was cornerback but corner was among the deepest positions in this draft. Wide receiver had a huge dropoff after round 1.

Vontae Davis CB- At first glance a very good first round pick but we would have been better served at wide receiver by taking Nicks or Britt here and taking a CB a little later. Neither receiver that we took seems to be an impact guy and there were still some impact tpe corners that lasted in this draft. I like Davis a very good combination of size and skill who should become a starter fairly soon in his NFL career. Not a bad pick in any way but Nicks was better value due to the limited talent available later at wide receiver. Will be a very good corner in the league

I would have drafted Nicks Wr
B

Round 2 pick 44- Pat White Wildcat Qb- I know many will blast me because I dont concur with the majority of this board. We passed on guys that will make very good fulltime players for a guy to play part time in our wildcat. I know the official word is we like him as a qb. The guy is basically the same size as Drew Brees with one major differance, he is a running qb.Being barely six foot and 196 we will be taking a major risk with him playing qb and running as much as he does in the NFL. Yes there are runningbacks this small but they dont also have to throw the ball. As a Qb prospect I dont see him as worth this pick( very rare for qb's this small to become good qb's and frankly the spread made his stats look much better). As a Wr prospect he was not even worth a draft pick since he never played receiver. I love how people assume he can play all these positions just based on seeing him play qb in college. Even if he can convert there has not been a huge amount of success for qb to Wr. Randel El has been about the best and he is not worth the 44th pick. We had actual needs with some good players left on the board and in my opinion we just wasted another second round pick. Some will even say he is the next vick although he is 20 pounds lighter than vick and not as fast.
We have also heard that Dallas would have drafted him, well big deal they reached on McGhee so they dont seem like genuies. Dont see him being a top level player at any position, he may be fun to watch though. To me second round is for starters and I dont see White as this. It was a shame that alot of players like Brace were selected before our pick although I think we would have went White anyway.
D

I would have drafted OLB/De Conner Barwin

Round 2 pick 61 Sean Smith
definately thought we needed to go corner twice on day one and as I predicted after Nicks and Britt wide receiver was ahuge dropoff in talent.
My favorite corners left on the board were Smith and Smith both corners as well as Francis.

Good speed , great frame. Very few corners of this size have been successful one reason that Jimmy Johnson never liked corners of this size.
Seems a pretty physical guy who should be an asset against bigger receivers. I definately believe we have our corner combo of the future and this is the beginning of the total end for Jason Allen. Great pick I agree toatally.
A

I would have taken Smith.

Round 3 pick 87
Patrick Turner Wr

After addressing CB we defiantely needed an impact receiver unfortunately the third round is not the best place to take one.
There were some possible impact Te's left on the board that I think would have been a better pick. Jared Cook has special speed, very good hands and god enough size to become a decent blocker. Turner is definately not fast and has been sort of an underachiever. That being said I like Turner as a player and think he was very underrated in this draft. He will give us good size and may actually become a solid starter in the league. Valuewise he was not a great pick but I think he will suprise.

My pick TE Jared Cook

C +

round 4 pick 108
Brian Hartline Wr

Ouch. There was so much better value all over the board than to take Hartline right here. I have no doubt that Hartline will be a good special teams player but he seems very unimpressive at his core position of receiver. Nothing truly stands out about him. I think Hartline will do some things that will make fans of him but the people we passed over for him even at receiver were better prospects.
D

Sidbury, Brown and Collie were much better in my opinion.

I would have taken CB DJ Moore In this round.

Round 5 pick 161 John Nalbone TE

Seems to have good size and speed. Good hands but still needs work as a blocker. Personally it would have been smarter to address this position in round 3 and get a future starter rather than a project. At this pick I liked Bear Pascoe better as an NFL player. I look at him as just another in the line of reaches we picked today but far from an awful pick.

would have taken. Duke Robinson G- No clue why he dropped this far but he will be a starting guard in the NFL while Nalbone may struggle to make the team.

D

Round 5 pick 165

Chris Clemons S
Pretty solid pick of an athletic safety that really needs to be coached up.
Was not overly impressive in college but definately good combo of skills.
Needs to really improve his reads in the pros because he has all the ability to do things just not always the smarts. Seems similar to Jason Allen but at a smarter draft position. would have taken Myron Pryor since we need a NT and he has talent but has been an underachiever.

B

Round 6 pick 181
Andrew Gardner T

Solid lineman to add as depth. Probably can backup guard and tackle. Not a great run blocker but has good head for the game and can get stronger.
Cant argue with a solid pick like this in round 6.

B
I would have taken Cedric Peerman RB
Peerman should have been off the board much sooner .

Round 7 JD Folsem LB

round 7 is usually fodder and this pick is definately fodder. Unless Parcells needs a player to care for the team's pets I dont see much reason to take this guy. Does Porter need a guy to tend to some old war wounds for his recently retired fighting dogs or will we be signing Mike Vick. Nobody has much on this guy and thats usually for good reason. Zack Follet LB would hae been a much better pick and would contribute on special teams.

Hard to give an F for a 7th rounder but I must.

F

Overall Grade C

some major problems with this draft but getting two future starters at CB and some decent pieces make this draft more palatable. The Pat White pick really bogs this draft down.

Blast away. I was blasted when I disagreed wth the following picks
Jason Allen
John Beck
Joe Toledo
Samson Satale
Reagan Mauia
Lorenzo Booker

I like the pick of the corners, but I was really wanting barwin with the 44th pick. My mouth dropped when we got pat white. We need a little more help in the front seven for sure. I don't disagree with the vonte davis pick, being an illinois man, because he is probably the best corner in this draft. If we would've picked a reciever at 25, it would've probably been like the 4th best one. The sean smith pick was right on, and I could even say that about patrick turner, but Brian hartline? Are we trying to get another wes welker here or what? I thought he could've gone much later. 2 rounds maybe. I loved the Clemons pick and Gardner pick, but I was looking for a RB in the later rounds also. Ricky won't be with us much longer so we need someone there. John Nalbone pick was decent. We just need a TE that can stretch the field! Why is it so hard to find good bocking and recieving Tight ends!!! Overall, I agree with you for the most part, but I think they did a little better than you thought.

Ive always enjoyed your posts, even if i may disagree sometimes. Thank you for your review. IMO the wildcat's offense won't last in the NFL. So i figure 4 years from now, Pat White may turn out to be a bust. In the short term tho he may make our offense very exciting..

It does make me happy that we have our future corners in 1 draft.

No blasting away hear, I think that would have been a very good draft, VERY similar to the one I wanted, especially Nicks in the 1st! Great Job!

Great thread title....like we were all sitting around just waiting to see what negative you would find to harp on (I can only hope it was dripping with sarcasm)

Quick question re your comments on the Nalbone pick....and I want you to think very carefully on this one....

How many success stories can you find regarding suppossed top prospects who inexplicibly dropped into the 5th round or lower (like Duke Robinson) who turned out to be good pros ?

and how many success stories of late round little-known players from small schools (like Nalbone) can you find?

I imagine that you will find a lot more from the second category. I had asked the 'Duke Robinson' question before and have yet to be provided an example.

Dlockz I find your post very disturbing. Not your draft grades but the fact that our govt arms you. I get chills just thinking about you having a gun in your hand.

Well I will do some research but without doing any.
Carl Nicks OL from last year

Percentagewise I doubt the small school players do any better, its just many more small school players drafted later so more examples come to mind easier while rarely does a top rated guard fall this far.

Can't really say I disagree with you at all except for the fact that I loved the Davis pick. Good post. I didn't agree with the White, Hartline, or Nalbone picks either.

I agree with most of this.

A few exceptions:

I think Davis has true star potential at CB. I think Nicks will be a solid WR, but the talent gap between he and Davis is vast. Davis would have probably been a top ten pick were it not for the exaggerated character issues.

I'm somewhere in between you and the lovers of Pat White. I also thought we'd pick up Barwin.

I'm also higher on Clemons.

. . .

But, more or less, I'm right with you.

What does his job in the have to do with his football opinions??

dont get me wrong I like Davis but passing on Nicks dropped us greatly in quality of receiver. I would have been fine with Dj Moore and Sean Smith as corners. I dont think Davis is intrinsically as far from Moore in ability as Nicks is to Turner and Hartline.
