I watched the Finsiders yesterday as Hickey was their guest. He said the same we have all heard on happy with the draft, got playersw with a passion for the game, high character guys, captains, and James, Turner,' and Landry with the ability to contribute right away.

Tey gave Clay his due for being on the top 100, and when it came to Twan he said that we are going to be saying the same things about Ellerbe a year from now. He basically said that we did not see the real Ellerbe last year, and this year he will be flyony all over the field, making a lot of tackles, plays, and forcing turnovers. As a former NFL LB, who has seen a whole lot of Ellerbe. I have to respect his opinion, and completely agree with him.

Looking forward to seeing the guy who played with his hair on fire this season, as I expected it last year. I believe he will be a difference maker, and we sure could use it at LB.

*Twan Russell is a former Cane, who player LB for 7 years in the NFL, 200-2002 with the Dolphins.

I hope becasuse Ellerbe really cant play any worse... I dont think our system is right for our ILB's

I agree that wasnt the Ellerbe I saw in Baltimore. But Baltimore had 4 LB sets so different scheme. I think we need to think about running that. Jordan and Ellerbe and I would say Wheeler too. Are better in the 3-4

Ellerbe was not as bad as people are making it out to be. He wasn't GREAT, but wasn't HORRIBLE either.. Wheeler on the other hand......

Ellebe was below average, I think he played most of the season hurt and a little overweight and I hope he comes into camp ready to go.

Ellerbee was faaaaar from the biggest problem. Hell, given his injury, atleast he made "plays." (Fumble Recovery, INT) Which is ALOT more than most our LBs.

To be fair. as mentioned, Ellere came from being a fist time starter in a 3-4 to MLB, and we switched sides on Wheeler. They both had to adapt to new positions, new team, and new scheme, which ain'tt easy in today's NFL. Neither played well but, both did do a few good things. Ellerbe defended 5 passes, 3 tackles for loss, 2 picks, and recovered 2 fumbles. Wheeler defended 7 passes (1 less than Clemons) and, had 5 tackles for loss (4th on the team).

In watching them play last year, they both hesitated and were out of position on countless plays, and Ellerbe had the added responsibility of trying to QB the D. I expect a HUGE improvement from both.

I was excited when we signed Ellerbe, after what I saw of hin in the Raven's SB run. He only played half the snaps but, led the team with 40 stops. Thats a stat for guys making a solo tackle which is a failure on the O, including sacks.

Last year, he had 41 to lead the team but, with double the snaps. Strangely enough, Wheeler was #2 with 37, and OV was third with 36.

Wheeler was the big problem

Wheeler, Ellerbe, and Wallace all SUCKED compared to what they are capable of doing. This year will be the time to judge, as they have had their year to adapt.

Ireland paid top $ to land Ellerbe and Wheeler, but neither played in a role like they came from. Was Ireland just projecting that they should fit here? Why would you spend like a drunken sailor to get them and guarantee large amounts in year 2, not knowing if they would fit in the projected roles? This is the act of a gambler. To what extent sre Philbin and Coyle partly culpable for this or this was clearly Ireland making personnel decisions and then the coaches have to make the best of it?
I'm still optimistic for Ellerbe but Wheeler needs to be improve significantly just to be a starter. If Jordie Tripp starts shining in preseason, don't be surprised if he is given a chance.

I don't know that Wheeler was that much worse than Ellerbe.

They both suck.

I felt Ellerbe played decent. Didn't he get hurt during the season? I thought the injury he had limited him a bit.

3rd down defense was horrid. Mostly LBs fault, imo.

Step slow or out of place, all year.
