I would think that Saban has confidence in one of the tackles in our organization right now to cut McIntosh outright. The draft is unpredictable as is FA and without a quality LT the entire line isn't nearly as effective. It'd be a large risk to take to go without an LT if one of the guys (alabi, smith, carey) we have weren't capable of stepping in.
