Byron Maxwell
As the season progressed, Maxwell got better but there is no question that continued penalties and his inconsistency hurt the Dolphins all season long. Maxwell will cost the Dolphins $8.5 million in cap space this year but his contract balloons to $10 million in 2018.
Releasing Maxwell will only save the Dolphins $5 million and carry $3 million in dead space but the problem is that Maxwell has as much chance to find himself riding the bench in 2017 as he does starting. Let’s not forget that Maxwell was benched in 2016 and only got the job back when Xavien Howard was injured.
The Dolphins need better play from the secondary and especially the corner positions. Maxwell is a big problem with that unit and it’s an area that the Dolphins need to upgrade. Releasing Maxwell is a bold move because the Dolphins do not have a replacement on the roster unless they view Tony Lippett as a real contender to start.
Miami should look at the draft for another corner on day three and free agency should also provide some options that are legitimately as good or possibly better than Maxwell while coming in close if not less than his current salary.

Mike Pouncey
The hip injuries are becoming more and more frequent with Pouncey and if he continues to need surgery then he won’t be on the field for the Dolphins. Center is the most important piece on the offensive line and as witnessed last season you need someone who can be consistent calling the blocking assignments at the line.
Pouncey is just shy of $9 million for 2017 and while releasing him would save almost $4 million the Dolphins would carry $5 million in dead money. So, draft or sign a new starting center and move Pouncey to right guard.
Pouncey is more than capable of playing guard and if he can stay healthy then the Dolphins will have a very good one but if he can’t stay healthy they should find it much easier to find a suitable if not at the very least a serviceable replacement to back him up.
With Ja’Wuan James struggling on the right side, putting Pouncey next to him could help the right side a lot. Miami would obviously need to find a replacement at center but consider the future of Mike Pouncey as it stands now.
Pouncey is under contract through 2020 with his salary increasing to $9 million in 2018, $8 million in 2019, and $9 in 2020. This is the final year that Miami would take a negative hit by releasing him. The most Miami will carry in dead money after 2017 is $2.2 million in ’18. Why is this important? Because if Pouncey can’t stay healthy the Dolphins very well may just call it quits and move on after 2017.
If they can address the center position this off-season they will lessen any blow that they will take in the next few years by still employing him at guard where he should find it easier to stay healthy.

For the Miami Dolphins 2017 should be the year to finally clear out the clutter that is hanging around its roster. Too much money is being spent on players that simply don’t put out the effort or have the talent to continue to take away a spot from someone who might be able to make an impact.
For starters I wouldn’t re-sign but one of the impending unrestricted free agents. While 13 players is a lot to replace none of them really are must keep players. For my money, I would re-sign John Denny and if the price and structure is team friendly I would keep Andre Branch and Dion Sims. Maybe Michael Thomas. The rest? No value.

Thoughts? It will be interesting to see who stays and who goes.

they should hire you as gm.. it sound like you know what you doing.

I think Albert and Maxwell will be gone. As pointed out in the article, Albert will save about $7 million on the cap. I like him, but it makes sense to move Tunsil to LT and bring in a guard for about the same salary as Albert.

I think the team keeps Pouncey and Stills is probably about a 50/50. Miami could likely find a speed receiver for less in free agency or in the middle rounds if the team wants to go that route.

Pouncey can't play guard. They tried that before and it didn't work

Ozzy rules!!

We keep Pouncey this year (and at center) because of the money - we give him ANOTHER shot to make it as center purely for cap reasons. If he misses more than one or two games, he is DEFINITELY cut after 2017.

I really hope Albert is gone. Good leader, but I never wanted him because of his injury history. Coupled with Pouncey, it is a recipe for disaster that any GM worth a damn should be able to see. You can't have two injury prone players on your OL, you shouldn't even have one.

I thought he did ok but was not as good as he is at center. We need to keep Maxwell and Pouncey. We need to replace them with affordable replacements or cutting them will only create more holes.

He wasn't horrible at RG but he probably wasn't 100% healthy, either. But putting him at RG for one season doesn't make sense if we want to move on from him - then that would mean we have a new starting C and RG next season. You either move on from Pouncey entirely this season or you keep him at center one more time and see how it plays out. If he misses time at center again in 2017 then we cut him and find his replacement.

the article is not well thought through imo, its called 5 bold moves before FA starts...and we should buy a new starting center ? before FA ??? also Mike Pouncey at RG was a disaster.i want to never see him at G again....and ever since that win streak got going James was a pretty good RT for us....he was not struggling at all

Out of 112 qualifying CB's, PFF ranked Byron Maxwell #11.

The post says cut him......the word for that isn't," bold." There is another word for that but I can't post it.

One thing you have to remember about Pouncey at guard, he was moved there in a pinch. He did struggle but I think it would be foolish to assume he wouldnt be at the very least an upgrade over anyone we have at guard right now except for Tunsil. Given that he gets a full offseason of work there, it wouldnt be shoking to see him excel there, Mike is a very good player with alot of athletic ability when healthy.

IMHO, To create 'new' holes on a team that already has a gracious plenty of them, makes no sense. I would agree that Maxwell and Albert are not ideal because of injury and interest issues, but they are under contract. We DO NOT have enough 'good' draft choices to even fill the needs we have, much less fill more by releasing 2 potential starters.

I think Pouncey could have played the last two games and I think Maxwell should have played the last two games. Those are two tough choices no doubt, but I'm sure Pouncey will be on the team in 2017 and I'm sure he won't play more than 8 games. I don't think Steen is the answer, not sure where PFF rated him. I think we will find secondary help this season along with Maxwell and Pouncey will give us improved depth as long as the cap space holds up.

The top priorities need to be resigning your guys (Sims, Stills, Branch, etc), fixing guard, fixing the run defense.

When you look at this team the #1 issue was stopping the run (15th pass D, 30th run D). How do you do that? Get better at LB and also get DEs to set the edge against the run

I agree with the thoughts on pouncey in that we need a center who will remain healthy, can pull, make the calls, and get push in the run game, the things Pouncey can do well when healthy. Regarding Maxwell, while I don't trust him, I'm not sure I am on board with creating another whole in the secondary considering the depth we have there. If that somehow changed, then maybe u cut him, but we have plenty of holes to plug on defense already without creating new ones this year where Maxwell can be a solid player.
