There are people who believe that, to enhance their chances of reaching the Super Bowl, teams can do more between February and August than they can starting in September.

The theory is that much of what separates the teams in the fall is set in place during the winter, spring and summer. Make the right moves and your chances of success are better.

But the reverse also is true.

Make the wrong moves - sign or draft the wrong players - and the climb to the top becomes much steeper. Here are five teams that ranked as championship contenders going into the 2005 season, failed to reach the Super Bowl and appear to have backslid since then:

1. New England

2. San Diego

3. Green Bay

4. Philadelphia

5. Oakland

1. New England -All they did was cut, and barely made moves

2. San Diego - They had to do something about having the QBs, but they shoulda tried to deal Brees when they had the chance, instead of letting him walk when it was too late.

3. Green Bay - I don't think they are doing all that bad, they should turn things around soon.

4. Philadelphia - McNabb's back, and TO's gone. They needed to do somethin about TO and he was untradable it seemed. Their division is getting stronger by the minute tho so...

5. Oakland - Yep, they belong here, don't know what else to say, but Randy Moss alone cannot save this team.

I think Phili and SD shouldn't be on that list. Both teams are moving ahead. Phili get mad points for dealing with the TO situation. SD, yes prol were dumb to let Brees go, yet they still are moving ahead, By buliding up their D the last few seasons. GB yes, let way too many guys leave, and belong here. Oak, well, I think they would be on this list every season at the pace they have been on. NE, I love that they are on this list. They know they can't compete with us, so they are doing all they can to change... stupid pats

I agree that the Pack and Raiders are going in the wrong direction.

The Pats will be competitive as long as the have BB + Brady.

Philly didn't do much one way or another, but getting that monkey off their back will help.

Chargers are probably taking a step back at the QB position. Expect to see a lot of LT this year.

IMO, the Pats can only really go one way, and that's down. My list would be:

Pats
Jets
Bills
Pats
Bills

The Pats cut dead wood and let some borderline depth players walk in free agency.

Losing McGinest could be big but, the Pats don't give big contracts to aging players. Letting Adam V. go was a head scratcher though.

The Pats have a TON of cap room so they'll be able to sign cheap free agents in the 2nd half of free agency and plug them into the system.

The Pats were never active early in free agency anyway when players are overvalued and teams spend like drunken sailors. By letting a bunch of guys leave they also set themselves up for a ton of compensatory picks in the next draft.

They locked up Seymour to a long term extension, they are still VERY young and they'll be healthy this year AND they had a good draft.

They also have the best player in football at the sports most important position, a great head coach and a class organization.

I'm not throwing dirt on them at all...in fact I think they're the faves to win the East and, if you wanted my early pick for the AFC champs I'd take the Pats.

the Packers need to be #1 on that list.

The pats arnt in to bad shape, but most expected them to be SB champs since they have had so much sucess the past few years.

Oakland. trading for moss was supposed to be a huge improvement, but they still manage to lose games.

san diego doesn't belong at all . . . not sure what they did wrong except lose brees (rivers should be better) and draft cromartie to boost a week secondary.

last year philly was wrong to let corey simon go, IMO he was the reason the colts defense became so much stronger and the eagles were not able to stop the run. they're definitely on the slide.

Can't see how the pats can keep games close and win in the fourth quater by replacing vinateri with gramatica

The pack and raiders are just awful. Favre will throw 25 picks before they bench him out of pitty. Brooks will be painful to watch also.

I don't think it's just about this offseason. I think it's more like: which front offices seem to be utterly incapable of puting together a good team, and aren't improving?

1. Lions

2. Vikings

3. Texans

4. Raiders

you might also argue for the Bills, but I think that although they seriously reached in the draft they at least got talented players that they wanted. The four I listed seem to have NO CLUE whatsoever as to how to build a decent team...Packers could be there, too but I think they get a year before I'll condemn them utterly. They just have a screwed up situation.

How can Rivers, a total unkown, do better than Brees?

.

Compensatory picks. GOOD Point. That sucks, the last thing we need is the pats with more picks..
