  1. Avoid the Franchise Tag – Essentially, there are two huge reasons to avoid this scenario.

  • The only way Landry gets Franchised is if he play out his current contract. That would mean that, even if he is franchised for somewhere in the neighborhood of $18 million, he will only earn $19.1 million over the next two years, as opposed to signing at the previously stated $11.5 million, which would earn him $23 million over the next two years.
  • Landry would be exposing himself to injury over two seasons (2017 & 2018) before being able to secure his long-term nest egg.

Or you know, wait and have your market driven up. I mean, I wouldn't flinch at $10M a year, but I'm not Jarvis. He very well could want more money

Baldwin got 11.5 per year? I could see 12mil/year getting it done.

Keep in mind he was originally extended for 3 years / 13 million . . . And then got the 4/46 million contract AFTER a 14 touchdown season (78 catches, nearly 1100 yards receiving and a near 14 Ypc).

Juice has only 13 touchdowns in 3 seasons . . . Baldwin has 21 in the last 2.

Honestly, he should get less than Baldwin, even with the cap increase.

100% agree with you, I think Baldwin is overall a more effective receiver... but I don't see him getting anything less than he did. I'd like him at 10mil/yr but realistically it's gonna be more like 12-12.5/yr

Yea he won't get less, just saying in theory he probably should.

Landry and Edelman are similar players for me. Both free agents next season too.

Landry's touchdowns, or lack there of, is more attributable to poor QB play and play calling than him not getting open. He had better not get $14 million dollars when we refused to pay the price for a top flight FA Guard, top flight FA Nose Tackle, a Pro Bowl OLB...

Oh no...I want to see how this frugality lends to W's on the scoreboard.

People talk about the comfort level Tannehill has with Stills...this screams comfort.

A lot of it has to do with his physical limitations....he's short and relatively slow. He is a very good route runner, plays with passion, but those limitations will keep him from being the guy who scores tons. I think the 100 for 1100 and 4-7 tds is his range for his career. I just can't imagine spending that kind of money for that level of production.

As for guards...yeah, if you are spending a ton on guard, you are not handling your finances correctly...in the end, we need to draft mid round plays at that position better....Ireland and the Hickster were awful at it, hope Tannenbaum and crew are better and indentifying those players who can be average guards in rounds 3 and 4.

All that said...he's top 5 at his position. I may say he's #2, behind Baldwin. What is that worth in a contract year? Add to that the fact that people were gaga over Kenny Stills developing a comfort level with Tannehill, to the point they didn't mind giving him $10 mill for one year's production. Heaven forbid a guy string together 3 straight years of top flight production.

Should he get $14 million...hell to the no, but what should he get?

Yeah...we've had such luck drafting guards in the middle to later rounds. Commit to making something great/dominant. The Cowboys had a 5th round rookie QB and a 1st round rookie RB being mentioned in the MVP voting because 4 out of the 5 starters on the O-line were first round talents. We will get it done with journeymen and the the drafting of talent like Billy taylor, Dallas Thomas, Jamil Douglass...hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

I think 5/60 should be reasonable for the position value and his level of play and production...I think 5'65 is what gets it done in the end...we have plenty of time.

No, we have been awful at it, but we already have 3 first rounders on the o-line and spending huge on the position is somehting a team like the Browns would do...and did. Manay teams seem capable of filling that position with mid-level players...just need to be better at selecting the right guy. As I said, old group was bad at it, new group needs to be better.

i disagree wholeheartedly with this notion that baldwin is a better receiver than landry.....i agree more with roy that he's an edelman type, but a better version IMO - baldwin's touchdown figures are inflated with his anomaly of a 14 score season - more than twice his career average of 6 - he was virtually their only option because they couldn't get anything goin with jimmy graham

removing salaries from the equation i think a majority of gms would take landry over baldwin - he is going to demand more, get more, and deserve more....i don't think there is anyone harder to tackle at the wr position than landry

we put ourselves in a very tough spot with landry by taking care of our own this offseason...landry sees checks flying and he's got more league-wide buzz than anyone else on the roster

I can see this turning into a bad divorce. I like the kid and I want him on my team but paying 11+ Million for a slot receiver is nuts.

I am ok with letting him play out the season and hit free agency next year. If Devante Parker develops the way we hope and breaks out this season we should be prepared to move on from Landry. Jarvis is not ODB, despite all his receptions.

We are in a tough spot because of #14's intangibles and on-field leadership. How do you put a price on that?
