Flores Did Not Run The Defense Last Year Like Many Want To Believe

Last year when the defense was shitting the bed early in the season, the players met with the coaches and told them they were screwing up and to call the games more aggressively. That's when Flores let Boyer take more control.

This year, I don't care what you run, you can't make it happen for a full 4 quarters with 3rd tier players. Having said that, some of those calls are inexcusable, just like the offense only running 4 times in the 4th quarter.

In any case, Barry is on notice, I would say.

Head coach means you are accountable for the defense too. So providing input when stupid calls are made (everyone line up in the end zone for the chargers, let's drop Phillips in coverage instead of rushing the passer, nobody knows how to tackle)

HC has to step in and stop Boyer's BS not just show up to the stadium on game day and hope for the best.

I don’t judge this years defense too harshly given the injuries. We are playing with a MASH unit in our secondary and Ogbah out as an edge. I would prefer to see more man/press coverage and more blitzes but I trust the current scheme is the result of what personnel is available relative to thier strengths.

The 1 missing piece that Has been a need for years is a bone crushing MLB.

PUP list casualty Byron Jones started a down turn and although Kader has done well....they have not had the coverage they have needed.

TWho cares? The secondary is decimated this year. Judging Boyer against last years defense is apples and oranges.
The loss of Brandon Jones killed us he's that dam good

This defensive style, even when physically intact, has not been good against top tier offenses.

we have feasted on bad qb/offenses.

Some of the regular posters said it over and over the past few seasons: the style of defense was unsustainable.

You can’t count on turnovers for stops. That is what we were getting. It’s a total feast or famine defensive scheme.

And it clearly is either too complicated or has a bad play caller. I see far too many instances of uncovered outlets, blitzes that leave a receiver wide open, super soft zones and 10 yard off the line of scrimmage man coverage.

Boyer gets some blame regardless of injuries.

EDIT: I would also strongly argue that when our O sucked, teams took less chances against our D. They were more conservative because they knew we would have a hard time scoring. That same thing played out in the 1 win season. We sucked, but had close games because teams were very conservative.

Most fans need a scapegoat when things aren't going well. They don't have the ability to think critically, if the defense gives up points its, "Boyer bad, Flores good!". Most fans are literal apes, average IQ from most posters here is sub 50. Nothing will change, it is what it is.
