The annual Southeastern Conference business meetings started here Tuesday, and by the end of the week, Florida President Bernie Machen will know if he has the support of the league in pushing forward a national championship football playoff plan.

Machen has been making noise about a playoff since December, when he feared the Gators might be shut out of the national championship game using the current Bowl Championship Series system. That didn't happen. The Gators got their shot at No. 1 and trounced Ohio State for the national championship.

Now, Machen says he has a plan that involves setting up a corporation to run a playoff separate from the NCAA and BCS commissioners.

"We'd just won the SEC championship, and I'm standing there in the Georgia Dome lamenting the fact I didn't even know if we were going to the national championship game," said Machen, recalling when he began to get motivated about devising a plan.

Good for him! Hopefully he lay the groundwork for this to happen and being the SEC might be the strongest conference in football, this is a good place to start.

When I first read it I thought he was talking about a playoff system for the SEC which they already have.

I think a playoff system for the Natl championship is just a matter of time.If they can combine it somehow with the bowl system its feasible IMO.

He has been working on this since Dec. So its not news to me. We are gunna have a playoff the question is only when

Good, we all want a playoff. How many teams and how will it be done is a bigger question.

Not true Im much in favor of the bowl system. I think it has its place in college. The NFL demands one champion, as it should. But I think the college format should be fun & slightly controversial. In a way it allows everyone to think they had a legitmate shot, whether you get one or not.

In what what is that? That seems to fly directly in the face of the controversy. The only way everyone will ever have a legit shot is if there is a playoff and they can play their way in. When left to objective voting, 1/2 field automatically loses their "shot".

A playoff will eventually happen, but to be honest, I'm not going to hold my breath. There are many planets that will have to align for this to happen. University presidents, BCS people, bowl people, coaches, the list goes on...

More than half actually.
