Part Two of our NFL Draft primer, focusing on offensive players at two positions of interest to the Dolphins:
• Receiver: The question is whether Oklahoma State's 6-2 Dez Bryant -- the consensus top receiver -- could slip to Miami's pick at No. 12, though the Dolphins also will consider defense. Many have Bryant going in the top 10, and Mel Kiper ranks him ninth overall.
He played in just three games in 2009 before an NCAA suspension for lying to investigators. ``Dynamic receiver, punt returner and TD maker,'' Kiper wrote on espn.com. ``He's compared to Terrell Owens, which could rub some the wrong way. But aside from T.O.'s physical strength, it's not out of line.''
Sporting News draft analyst/former Browns scout Russ Lande identifies three other possible first-rounders: Illinois' Arrelious Benn, Notre Dame's Golden Tate and Cincinnati's Mardy Gilyard. All are projected to go lower than 12th -- Kiper has none in his top 25. Those three would be options if Miami trades down; many have Gilyard going in Round 2.
Benn's numbers dropped (38 catches for 490 yards; 67 for 1,055 in '08). ``But NFL teams know his big-play ability as a receiver and return man can't be taught,'' ESPN's Todd McShay said.
Lande calls Gilyard (80 catches, 1,150 yards, 11 TDs) ``the most explosive big play receiver in the draft, better than Benn'' -- though most rate Benn higher. Like Lande, Kiper rates Gilyard higher than others do, but he has a history of ankle injuries.
