Just saw it on ESPN.
Jarvis Moss is declaring for the NFL draft. He is a 6'6 251 lb Defensive End who is incredibly fast. He is compared to Jevon Kearse by many Gator faithful that I talk to, and in practice he has run 4.6 40 yard dashed ( He actually ran a 4.48 coming into UF from highschool, but he was 220 lbs back then ) He also has reported short shuttle times in the 4.15 region. For comparison, Jeremy Mincey was a Florida defensive end who went pro, running a 4.25 short shuttle. There is not a single gator fan I've ever talked to that wouldn't admit that Jarvis Moss has a much better top end than Mincey, and a slightly quicker bottom end. That's WR type shuttle..
Ryan Smith, CB, from UF teamed up with Reggie Nelson for 12 total INTs ( 6 each ) to make them the best CB/S tandem in the country. Smith is perfect in form as a cornerback, but is limited severly by his physical ability. He will play nickelback in the NFL, more than likely. He lacks the desired height ( he's 5'10 ) and the desired weight ( he's 165-170 lbs ) and the desired speed ( he ran a 4.59 coming into Florida from Utah )
But, he's mechanically perfect and he has tremendous hands for a cornerback. Zone schemes are his strong suit, and he will cover smaller men in man coverage but he's not strong so he won't be jamming anyone anytime soon.
He played up to speed with MANY top SEC WRs, being Floridas #1 CB for most of the year.. ( Florida fans, was he really UF's #1 CB? I thought Reggie Lewis was, Im just going off the information in front of me ) So, as they say, 40 times MAY be overrated here, and he could be a solid #2 CB in the NFL? He could be a decent 2nd day option for the Dolphins
My personal thoughts on how they effect the Dolphins draft:
They honestly don't. Miami has no use for a player like Ryan Smith who will be a career nickelback, nor for Jarvis Moss. He's a fantastic pass rusher who does a fine job at run stopping when he has to, but Miami is still a 3-4 team and he is a 4-3 type end.
Now, if Miami switches to the 4-3, Moss would be a fantastic player to try and grab in the bottom of the second round or the top of the 3rd. He could be a replacement for Jason Taylor, because Matt Roth is a very good athlete and has shown flashes of being a starter someday, he doesn't have the quickness Taylor does by any means.
Ryan Smith - a 5th/6th round prospect
Jarvis Moss - 2nd/3rd round prospect
Your guys thoughts? I really like Moss, a lot.
