Just saw it on ESPN.

Jarvis Moss is declaring for the NFL draft. He is a 6'6 251 lb Defensive End who is incredibly fast. He is compared to Jevon Kearse by many Gator faithful that I talk to, and in practice he has run 4.6 40 yard dashed ( He actually ran a 4.48 coming into UF from highschool, but he was 220 lbs back then ) He also has reported short shuttle times in the 4.15 region. For comparison, Jeremy Mincey was a Florida defensive end who went pro, running a 4.25 short shuttle. There is not a single gator fan I've ever talked to that wouldn't admit that Jarvis Moss has a much better top end than Mincey, and a slightly quicker bottom end. That's WR type shuttle..

Ryan Smith, CB, from UF teamed up with Reggie Nelson for 12 total INTs ( 6 each ) to make them the best CB/S tandem in the country. Smith is perfect in form as a cornerback, but is limited severly by his physical ability. He will play nickelback in the NFL, more than likely. He lacks the desired height ( he's 5'10 ) and the desired weight ( he's 165-170 lbs ) and the desired speed ( he ran a 4.59 coming into Florida from Utah )

But, he's mechanically perfect and he has tremendous hands for a cornerback. Zone schemes are his strong suit, and he will cover smaller men in man coverage but he's not strong so he won't be jamming anyone anytime soon.

He played up to speed with MANY top SEC WRs, being Floridas #1 CB for most of the year.. ( Florida fans, was he really UF's #1 CB? I thought Reggie Lewis was, Im just going off the information in front of me ) So, as they say, 40 times MAY be overrated here, and he could be a solid #2 CB in the NFL? He could be a decent 2nd day option for the Dolphins

My personal thoughts on how they effect the Dolphins draft:

They honestly don't. Miami has no use for a player like Ryan Smith who will be a career nickelback, nor for Jarvis Moss. He's a fantastic pass rusher who does a fine job at run stopping when he has to, but Miami is still a 3-4 team and he is a 4-3 type end.

Now, if Miami switches to the 4-3, Moss would be a fantastic player to try and grab in the bottom of the second round or the top of the 3rd. He could be a replacement for Jason Taylor, because Matt Roth is a very good athlete and has shown flashes of being a starter someday, he doesn't have the quickness Taylor does by any means.

Ryan Smith - a 5th/6th round prospect
Jarvis Moss - 2nd/3rd round prospect

Your guys thoughts? I really like Moss, a lot.

I think Smith is projected higher than that.

Depending on who is available i the 2nd, I wouldn't object to Moss. Roth is great, but he is a closed end (ie, take up blocks, get to the QB if you can). Moss is an opened end (ie, get to the QB/ball at all costs). We need another pure pass rusher.

For my " projections " I just use Mel Kiper, and an insider ( hardly insider, just not information available for publication ) source that works in the New England Patriot's Pioli's office. Pioli and his scouts have initial grades on everyone that declares the day they declare ( using strictly their physical attributes and reputation ) then they work from there, updating it whenever they scout that specific player.

It's where I get my information when I say " Ive been seeing/hearing him as a so and so prospect "

But in the end, I'm just another guy from the internet, hearing things from a friend I've known for a long time, so take it with a grain of salt.

If Ryan Smith busts out of the combine and runs anything near a 4.5 flat and under, he's a 2nd or 3rd rounder, for sure.

This is where I think you are wrong. Moss could very well play the hybrid in a 3-4/4-3 scheme. His build and style of play is similar to Jason Taylor's. Do I think we will draft him? I wouldn't be opposed to it. Moss can flat out get to the QB. He also blocked the kick that won the South Carolina game for the Gators.

When I said that, I was thinking he'd be a good fit for Miami, but he's valued much much more as a 4-3 pass rusher. He's probably going to be taken in the 2nd round, at the latest.

Once his combine numbers come out to anything that we believe them to be ( good strength, 6'5+, 250+ lbs, 4.6 40 with a 4.1 short shuttle ) he'll shoot up the draft charts at the bottom of the first round ALA Manny Lawson.

I just don't see a way Miami can grab him without giving up what hes worth to a team that runs a true 4-3

Moss is freaky athletic... Im also starting to think if your last name is Moss your probably going to make it in the NFL.

Yea I have to agree with that. Moss will be good in a 4-3 and a 3-4 because he is versatilve and athletic. Plus he could learn a lot from JT.

Jevon Kearse is only about 10 lbs heavier than Jarvis Moss, but no doubt hes faster. Jevon Kearse was one of the fastest DE's Ive personally ever seen. He has the record fo the fastest 10 yard dash at the NFL combine ( he actually tied Deion Sanders ) and he ran a 4.43... at 6'4 249 lbs.

Thats freakish.
