Florio: Half measure by Stephen Ross will hamper his Dolphins

The owner is taking necessary and measured steps, and Florio is calling it half-measures, proving himself to be just another loudmouth who wants to burn the building down.
Ross has never done what was necessary (hindsight being what it is) and it has never been measured. He’s made bold moves that are short sighted and reactive in nature.

If Ross keeps McD with the idea that firing him now does nothing, but cans him at the end of the year - great!
If Ross keeps McD with the idea that the new GM will decide - okay, a little more dangerous.
If Ross keeps McD with the idea that the new GM works with McD - we are screwed.

Stability and vision start at the top and Ross has shown neither.

I do not agree with that. McDaniel is not the obstacle to the team competing for Super Bowl.
The main obstacle was the incompetent GM, poor roster. Part of that poor roster is a poor QB room that cannot compete for Super Bowl. That room needs to be rebuilt. And finally, the inexperienced defensive coordinator whose defense allows 30+ regularly. That needs to be fixed.
McDaniel's offense works for Super Bowl run, there is no reason to replace it.

People forgot, or excuse away, that McD runs a very good offense with (in their words) a QB that isn’t even NFL quality. Then they also turn a blind eye to the horrible roster by criticizing McD instead of blaming the man they all say is the worst GM in the league and who is responsible for it. Not to mention claiming that injuries don’t matter as they excuse teams like the Ravens and Lions underachieving due to injuries. It’s literally crazy. 😂

McDaniel’s offense is just as much of an issue as Weaver’s defense. He has good ideas. Some of his concepts work. The main failing point is that he expects near perfect execution and when that doesn’t happen the play fails.

I can point out 5-10 plays a game where Tua takes a 1 step drop back and throws. These plays require Tua to have faith the play design will work and the primary read will be open. He does not check down, he does not scramble; he throws the ball where the target is supposed to be.

I believe 4 or 5 of his INTs have come on this type of play. We have failed 4th down conversions using this type of play. The 4th down fade to Achane that failed was a perfect example. From the moment that play was called the ball was going to Achane.

This type of offense handcuffs your QB. You would never want to put a guy like Allen or Mahomes in an offense like this because it would take away their X factor.

I honestly don’t hate McDaniel, but I think a wide zone scheme is too soft for the modern NFL. If you want to be able to run the ball you need downhill maulers.

No that offense has been proven to work, in SF and with the Rams to take a team to the Super Bowl.
And there is no room to question individual gameday decisions, and especially with Tua at QB and this roster.
The offense works, and the goal is Super Bowl. The goal is not to make you happy, or win some game.

a) let the new GM decide
b) firing McDaniel doesn’t accomplish anything
c) HC candidates might appreciate this treatment
d) Ross is dysfunctional

The new GM should want his own hand picked coach.

McDaniel will never be a good head coach.
  • McDaniel lost the locker room and the respect of a lot of the players.
  • Sloppy game day play
  • Excessive mindless penalties
  • Lack of discipline on and off the field
  • Slow to get plays in
  • Predictable offense with little to no half time adjustments
  • Predictable defense with little to no half time adjustments
  • Bad game management, time outs, challenges, clock management, etc
  • Heavy reliance on gimmick plays
  • Does not demonstrate the ability to exploit an opponents weakness.
All of these inadequacies and more fall directly on McDaniel's shoulders. He lacks the charisma and drive to motivate his players. Great coaches get passable play out of mediocre individuals. McDaniels cant do that....at all...He cant even get average play out of above average players.

He may turn into a decent offensive coordinator but he will never be an accomplished head coach.

Are there any examples of a team firing their coach and GM at the same time mid season?

I don’t buy that. McDaniel was hired to fix Tua and build an offense that could win in January. Two years later, it’s still a finesse, timing-based system that wilts when defenses get physical. He’s built a track team, not a playoff roster. Every time the Dolphins face top-tier fronts, the offense disappears. That’s not just a “roster” issue — it’s a philosophy issue. McDaniel prioritizes speed and scheme over the trenches, and until that changes, this team’s ceiling stays right where it’s been.

Keep McD the entire rest of the season so we get the #1 pick

Trade as many players as possible before deadline

Find the best GM candidate after consulting with every winning organization who’s drafted well and acquired good Free Agents over the past several seasons

Try and trade Tuna ( good Fng luck) or just cut em and eat the cap hit. He’s useless!

Let new GM pick new HC and then new HC picks new staff
