With Joe Philbin beating out Mike McCoy and Todd Bowles for the MIami job, you'd have to think the Dolphins would move for Matt Flynn at QB


But there was one thing Philbin had over McCoy that was unavoidable: He coached Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn, who arguably will be the NFL's most sought-after free agent. If Philbin can help the Dolphins land Flynn, Miami definitely made the right choice with what was left in this year's thin crop of coaches.

The Dolphins know as much as anyone that first-time head coaches are a roll of the dice. Sometimes you land John and Jim Harbaugh. Sometimes you get Tony Sparano. That is why the Dolphins first tried to hire a proven commodity with Jeff Fisher.

But Miami's turnaround is just as much about the quarterback as it is the next coach. You need both to be successful. McCoy worked with Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore in Carolina. Barring a significant trade up in the draft, McCoy and Moore most likely would have led the Dolphins in 2012.

In contrast, Philbin has the potential to make this hire a two-package deal from Wisconsin. Philbin and Flynn could be the exciting, fresh start the Dolphins need. Think Green Bay's high-powered offense meets South Beach. Sounds intriguing, right?

The Dolphins, known for their dysfunction, did their best with what was left on the market. They missed out on the home run (Fisher). But they still hit a double (Philbin) that potentially could be stretched to a triple if Miami's new coach uses his influence to snag Flynn in free agency. With Philbin now in Miami, you have to peg the Dolphins as one of the major favorites in the Flynn sweepstakes.

Yes!! More than willing to take the gamble on Flynn. All he cost is money...and it's not mine so I don't give a ****.

But yea give me a QB who threw 6 TD's in a game. Please and thank you...
 
Bring his talents to south beach..could be a great move! Have we ever had the west coast style offense in Miami?
 
I'll tell you this much: If we go into training camp with Chad Henne, Matt Moore, Matt Flynn and maybe a rookie from the 4th-5th round...our franchise QB has to be one. Those 3 guys, disagree or not...have proven they can play and win. Neither have proven to be Pro Bowlers, but all have proven they can do good with a good OL, good receivers, good RB support. If Matt Flynn comes here, there's no need to draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round...we let this year pass, and if nothing comes out we go ALL IN on Matt Barkley next year. If Flynn comes here, we fix our OL once and for all. Im thinking Martin (RT) and Zeitler (OG)
 
Can't wait for a 7th round pick with 2 career starts!
 
I really resent and am getting sick of the media rhetoric that we missed "the homerun" and "struck out" on Fisher. Rarely has such media slathering been accorded a coach who put up 6 winning seasons out of 17, espouses an archaic run first philosophy and has gone 14-18 the last 2 seasons coming in 3rd and 4th in a relatively weak division. Despite going against the the wisdom of that old adage: instead I believe that sometimes the devil you don't know almost can't help but be an improvement over the one that you do. :idk:

I'm happy with the way things worked out although would have preferred Billick or Zimmer, but some things really do happen - or not, for a reason like the Orton trade we ended up not making.
 
Flynn is probably less of a gamble then a rookie QB and he won't cost any draft picks. Throw a boatload of money at him and take a chance, if he sucks we might be bad enough to draft Barkley next year. Or just maybe he is a diamond in the rough and we, the fans, finally get lucky and have a winner once again in Miami.
 
So the plan is to go with Green Bay's table scraps at coach and quarterback, then pretend you aspire to their level?

I'm glad I don't handicap that way on a daily basis.

Seems like we got a view of that from Kansas City in regard to New England's second stringers.
