i've been wondering for quite some time the value calculated by scouts between how players play the game, week in week out, and thier "combine numbers"....ie players who show up on game tape vs those whose numbers are off the charts so to speak...i think you's catch my drift....*cough gholston cough*....anyway long story short...i for one would love to see how scouts grade players based on how they performed on the football field and just how much a difference is made by running a fast 40 etc

Most scouts(good) go by what they see on film and the combine supplements the decision.

yeah i get what you're saying....but what i mean is just how much is thier decision swayed by phenomenal workout numbers.....ie....did they have a player rated purely on perfomance as a (just for example)mid 2nd round grade and then after a superb combine bump them up abit( players potential/ceiling) to a low 1st etc.....i hope that makes it a bit clearer

let me put this another way if i may....has anyone ever watched the draft and thought a player was drafted much, much earlier than u thought they should be solely because of how they performed at the combine?

i don't know if this has ever been done before but i'd love to read scouting/talent reports post season and post combine

Combine is the last inspection of goods. The value board is made before the combine based on the career body of work. The hip movement, the 40 speed, the cone drills, the strength drills, the high jump, are just reassurance that what was seen on the film was not a fluke, or it is. Or, if someone athletically jumps out, then it's a reason to reinspect the film. imo.

The combine should only be used as a secondary resource for teams. You look at things to make sure there are no red flags such as: height and weight, injury problems, intelligence, etc. For example, if you have a QB who scores a 2 on the wonderlic, you might want to check up on their "football IQ" or if you have a WR who runs a 4.6 or higher, you may question their speed. Overall, you shouldn't look too much into 40 times or how much the bench, etc.

IMO the opinion on a player is based on watching game tape. combine numbers tell you a bit about the ability of players to transition their game and maybe make a positional switch. but generally, it's watching game tape that's most important.

yeah i absolutely get what you are saying...i'm not naive in the draft process....obviously i'm no super scout or whatever...all i'm saying is if you watched vernon gholston's college career and his "wonderful combine performance" just how much do u value his combine numbers over a "lesser mmmmmm workout warrior" zach thomas for instance?

Combine means a lot for prospects who are from small devisions. Who owned in everything they did, except the only knock is they played teams like Eastern Hawiai'i State University at honaloo loo.
