If there is one stupid argument out there about Philbin it is that he's not a motivator. What a bunch of BS

Do you need motivation really? THIS IS PRO FOOTBALL NOT HIGH SCHOOL

Belichick preaches "do your job". Just because when you watch "remember the titans" you get goosebumps with Denzel's speeches doesn't mean that is what this team lacks. You think Mike McCarthy is bringing his team to tears before a game in the locker room.

It is ASININE to use that as a reason for a new coach. While we are at it I'm tired of hearing Tannehill lacks competitive spirit or emotion. That's what people say about Eli too and he's got 2 rings that he could put on his middle fingers for those people questioning his desire/ leadership.

This really reminds me of when everyone called for Tom Coughlins head only to have him winning it all the next season.

Play calling I agree was crappy at times. But at times it was really good. Main issue was o line that blew beyond belief.

Personnel needed some improvement yes but don't forget we lost Keller, Gibson, Patterson was hit or miss most of the year, Binns was having a good camp, oh and that whole Martin incognito thing lol. That's two important pieces of the line that were gone. All those players were signed by Ireland and dint forget Ireland signed M. Thomas the week of the patriot game.

Oh the patriot game, that must have been because of a great pre game motivational speech.

One of the major roles of any coach at any level is to motivate and prepare your players. Philbin undoubtedly failed miserably.

I actually disagree, I think Philbin did an amazing job motivating players all season. Did you see the post about where our offensive linemen where ranked (except for Pouncey). We lost 2 of those linemen in that Martin Incognito fiasco that threatened to derail the season. I think Philbin is a HUGE reason why we made it through that. Also the linebacker move from last year single-handily caused us the playoffs. Philbin took a team with a joke for an offensive line and with linebackers that couldn't stop a runny nose and almost got us into the playoffs, while also beating all 3 teams we faced that are now in the AFC playoffs!

This ra-ra crap is stupid! Tony Dungee was an awesome coach whose demeanor is much like Philbins.

Ok Mr. GM.

Like changing coaches is what we needed the last 5 times.

New coach equals success. Just like when we got Saban oh wait that didn't work too well. Oh but wait there was that stud offensive coordinator what was his name Cam Cameron.....oh forgot that wasn't very good. But we got parcels and his boy sparano, sorry that wasn't great.

There was that time we replaced Shula because he had just gotten too old to relate to the players (lol, must have been those ever important pre game pep talks) for THE SUPER STAR CANT MISS COACH JIMMY JOHNSON. Oh yeah that was a disaster too.

So now we get rid of a guy that has had two years with a rookie QB in year 1, a transition back to the 4-3, a scandal that was huge, and who hasn't completely fallen on his face for the next great thing out there that will excite the fan base for 5 games until they realize that the coach doesn't conduct pep rally's at the practice facility the day before the games to get the team prepared to play

New coach is taking a step back. Philbin deserves this 3rd season to really show if he can get this team where they want to go

I agree. So and so is a "leader of men" or this guy is not a "leader of men" is one of the most hollow and overused phrases on this site. I don't believe Philbin is above criticism, but the notion is he is not a leader because he doesn't scream and yell or because he reads cue cards is ridiculous.

He's terrible! Its just more mediocrity! BLOW IT UP and START OVER! And if we don't win the superbowl in 2 years, BLOW IT UP AGAIN AND START OVER AGAIN!

Am I doing it right?

The guy is who he is. There are a lot of ways to coach.

I hope they give him his 3rd year. I'd love to see Sherman out but if Joe wants him back and it don't work out then he hangs himself.

I'm optimistic with Tannehill and Philbin. Let's stay the course one more season at a minimum. This thing is heading in the right direction whether people like it or not

Absolutely, people are just silly sometimes.

Players can be motivated by fear, by success, by camaraderie with the teammates, etc. But it is pretty damn clear that guys at this level need to be motivated by something or someone. When you are making more money than you ever thought possible, it's pretty easy to lose your motivation. It's pretty easy to get comfortable. You think guys that play for Belichick aren't motivated to play their @sses off for him because they know he will cut ties with them in a second if they don't? You think Patriots players don't see the payoff of following Belichick because he makes them winners? You ever see the way Seahawks players go crazy with Carroll during and after games? They love the guy. Jim Harbaugh is so over-top-intense, you think that doesn't rub off on his players? Did you see Rex Ryan and the love-fest he was having with his team on Sunday?

Philbin is an emotionless stiff who wants a business-like atmosphere around the team. Stay even-keeled, don't complain, don't make waves, etc. He dumped a lot of veterans who made mistakes, got out of line, complained. That tells current players to keep their heads down. None of this leads to players wanting to bust it for their coach. Philbin seems like he'd be a great mortician or monk. NFL head coach, not so much.

Same goes with "flat" the new buzzword around here. This team always looks "flat" at the start of games to some. Maybe true maybe not, who the **** knows but the Patriots are another team that tends to look "flat" out of the gate quite often.

Dolfan4life - Don't come here and try to be logical. Everyone on Finheaven knows that Joe is not a leader of men and lacks the rah rah motivational skills of real manly men in the NFL like Rex Ryan. Joe even needs cue cards to remember to say "we were beaten by a better team on the day", "we didn't make enough plays" when we lose and "thank the players for a good team effort" and to say "Dolphins on 3" (raise the right straight arm and try to look inspirational) when we win.

As stated in my above post, this is simply not the case. The players are backing Philbin and he got us through a lot of challenges, mostly created by our illustrious GM. You could have brought Vince Lombardi back from the grave and his motivation wouldn't have been able to fix our crap line and our Wheelers suck ass play.

Well... Since it was reported that he is not seen as a good motivator by some of his own players and some of the lockeroom, your assessment is extremely inaccurate.

The ra-ra, yelling, and intimidation really helped Nick Saban here didn't it?
