For Dolphins, minicamp perspective requires cautious optimism

I feel the same way that this time of year requires cautious optimism but it's still good to read about what some of these rookies and undrafted free agents go through or have overcome in their quest to make a NFL roster.

I never really cared much for minis or rookie camps anyway. Of course I am glad to get good news about underdog players and really any positive offseason info on our Dolphins but I don't take much into people nit picking the rookies and 2nd year players. I can't wait for all the TC battles to take center stage and that will be when the negatives and positives should be paid attention to.

minicamp truth be told . . . really means nothing as far as trying to make the roster . . . or even battling for a position. This past rookie camp . . . is more of an OPPORTUNITY for the UDFA's to either get invited back to a second camp or even get signed. For the guys who got drafted . . . its more of a meet and greet.

Yes i remember last year so many were so happy on this board when they heard that Quinn had a bad rookie camp. Quinn then lit it ip in preseason.

For the fans minis are completely useless and often misleading. The interest in them comes from the fact that it is so close to the draft and that we are 'football starved' at this time of year... Having said it... it's still fun to talk potential but...

These are practices without pads and without the best competition even THIS team can field. It offers the coaches a chance for a little comparison of the strengths they saw on film so they can 'categorize' them a little better. They offer very little more than the opportunity to coach the kids some and evaluate measureables.

I think I will reserve my judgement on Jayson Foster until the pads are on and Joey Porter catches him in the open field when he is forced to stop for a pass that is underthrown... Then you will see what we have.

I mostly ignore rookie camps. I am interested in hearing who works hard, but that is about it.

You can't make too big of a deal out of rookie mini-camps or mini-camps in general. I think these things become a big deal because football fans are starving for some football. Mini-Camps and OTA's temporarily satisfy that hunger.

Well the problem with that analysis is that preseason also has little or no merit in terms of determing how a player will do in real games.

We've had tons of QBs light it up in preseason, but it hasn't amounted to much when the games count.

P.S. Still stuck on Quinn?

While I agree that most events at a minicamp are over blown, it is a big deal to the tryout guys. Tell the kids like Toribio that mini camp is no big deal. He became a roster player this weekend. But most of the media hype is way overdone.
