I’m sure it’s just coincidence, but the last few Pro Football Writers Association “Good Guy” Award winners (as voted on by local media) haven’t lasted much longer.
Kevin Carter, 2006: The Dolphins, under Cam Cameron and Randy Mueller, decided the defensive lineman they inherited was too expensive, and he signed with Tampa Bay.
Andre Goodman, 2007: The cornerback stood up and took the heat for a 1-15 team. He played well the next year, then wasn’t given much of an offer, and signed with Denver.
Vonnie Holliday, 2008: The defensive end, who probably has a future holding a microphone, didn’t restructure his contract and was sent packing after the season. He signed with Denver also.
Greg Camarillo, 2009: The receiver made it through the offseason, but was just traded to Minnesota for a reserve cornerback, Bennie Sapp.
And that doesn’t even include Jay Feely or Justin Smiley, both of whom were “go-to guys” in the locker room — and near-winners of the award — and then were suddenly gone.
