Unless the Buffalo Bills wallop Mike Shanahan right out of his argyles next week and sign him straight away, there's a good chance each party will use the other as a means to an end.

Football insiders are skeptical Shanahan actually will be on the Bills' sideline in 2010, but their reported meeting next week serves a purpose for both sides. It won't be a waste of time.

As one of Shanahan's colleagues told me Thursday morning, the former Denver Broncos head coach likely will use his meeting with Buffalo as leverage for a more attractive opening.

Shanahan linking himself to the only current NFL opening theoretically will prompt increased interest from other teams who are considering a change. There's little incentive for Shanahan to sign with the Bills before seeing what else is out there. With a pair of Super Bowl rings, he has enough cachet to sit back and wait.

But don't think the Bills are being used as foils. They're already getting mileage out of being associated with Shanahan.

Merely meeting with him sends a message to a frustrated fan base that the Bills are serious about their coaching search. Bills fans have spent years screaming in vain for a head coach who's a proven winner. Dick Jauron's tenure wrought emotions ranging from anger to apathy.

NFL.com senior columnist Vic Carucci, citing an unnamed source, said Shanahan is Buffalo's top candidate, but Bill Cowher also is high on their wish list.

From Carucci's blog entry:

The Bills, the source said, are willing to offer whatever salary is necessary to land a high-end candidate such as Shanahan and would give him total control of the football operation, something Wilson has generally been opposed to doing in the past. Adding to the job’s attractiveness, according to the source, is the fact the team is in solid financial shape and not burdened by any dead salary-cap money.

It's not that the team isn't in solid financial shape, it's because who ever buys the team after Wilson can make more money in a larger market.

Like, instead of 10% return for shareholders of a company that employ 1000 people in the US, it can be moved to China and get 15% return. It's not just about making a profit, it's about making a bigger profit.

Doubt the Bills land Shanahan, but even if you did, I can't say I'd be scared one bit. Shanahan has done nothing without Elway and Davis.

Cowher I'd be a little worried.

Such a shame Wilson is finally starting to do the right thing. I think Cowher would be the better move tough.

No offense but for the Bills' to even have a chance of landing a proven coach/gm, they will have to throw the bank at that guy (whether it's Shanahan, Holmgren, Dungy, Cowher). The coach that lands the Bills' job will require the the biggest contract in NFL history. Buffalo just isn't attracting anything, they had talent before that looked like things were beggining to shape up but it's been fading away. Only thing that will attract one of those guys is money. So if your owner is willing to throw the bank, I am pretty sure they can land one of those names.

In typical Wilson fashion, he'll publicly "pursue" the Cowhers, Shanahans and Holmgrens with purposely low-ball offers and then, after "trying his best," end up signing another "name" HC like Fassel, Billick or Denny Green whose best days are behind them. If the senile octogenarian really meant business, he'd hire Marty Schottenheimer, who, at this point would take a low ball offer to get back into the game, has proven he knows how to rebuild a hapless team into one that may or may not end up sniffing the early rounds of the playoffs somewhere down road. Fortunately for us, with old Ralphie, it's always been more about smoke and mirrors.

You think $10 million a year is enough? Thats what they said on NFL Network, the Bills are ready to offer Shanahan or Cowher $10 Million a year.

Which would make that guy the highest paid coach in NFL history by $2 million a year.

Yeah I can see Shanahan accept 10 million a year for sure. I don't think any other team would offer that type of money, it'd be hard to turn down.

Why the talk about moving to Toronto if the team is in solid financial shape?

I think they're talking salary cap. Now..how much that has to do with the financial well being of a franchise I have no idea. What I do know is Buffalo (and it's been reported) has some, if not the lower ticket prices in the league. I'm just not sure how you make much money. It's wonderful from a fan perspective but business wise can't be that good. It's not like it will matter. Wilson will hire Shanahan, die in 2 years and it's going to start all over anyway.

Unless Shanny is bringing John Elway and Terrell Davis with him to Buffalo, who cares? He has one more playoff win in the last 10 years than the Bills do.
