So we went with needs over best player available in Rounds 1 and 2 and can't fault them because we had some specific needs, namely, DL, G, CB and S, going into the Draft. All the other positions, we are set at or have young players we want to go with, such as Patrick Paul at LT. Drafting the best player at #13, say Tyler Warren, wouldn't help with the need issues we had. So sticking with the philosophy of needs over BPA, who in your opinion were better available DL than Kenneth Grant at 13th and better Guards at #37 than Jonah S. and why? Grier said that 3 Teams called him after he drafted Grant saying that he was their guy. I am assuming two of the teams may be the ones who drafted DT - Arizona and Pittsburg - but not necessarily. As for G Jonah S. at #37, I was listening to the draft coverage on NFL Radio and as they were announcing that pick they said that Miami jumped ahead of the Patriots who were interested in drafting him. Ditto for two Patriot reporters. He has T/G versatility so that is a plus for the Dolphins. In pre-draft rankings for DT, I often see Walter Nolen ranked ahead of Grant although Todd McShay at the Ringer had Grant rated higher than him at #15.

I think Nolen had some issues that the organization didn't care for. Maybe a bigger upside. I don't agree with need over best available, it has to be a combination of the two

Miami did not go need over BPA IMO

The fact that you acknowledged multiple teams for Grant, as well as the Patriots for Jonah indicate these werent just need based picks.

At 13, there's no other player for me as all the Linemen were drafted (Banks/Campbell/Membou and Booker), as there was no linemen left worthy of the 13 spot, Grant was BPA at that point.

Jonah? You can make an argument for certain players, but guys like Watts who I would have taken at 48 fell, so it's tough to say.

Without seeing Teams boards, there's really no telling if these were BPA or not.

At the end of the day, this is how you build a team. A successful team. A team that can still compete in December and January.

If we're drafting TES and CBS we're not really building a long term successful team IMO

Trenches first. Build the dang trenches then move on. I wish Miami was more active with the O line. But I liked this draft

BPA is a made up concept. It is 100% subjective. We clearly had Grant and Savaiinaea rated highly. I don’t think teams care how the media views players. A perfect example is how Sanders was mocked in the 1st round by most “experts” and he was taken in the 5th.

Exactly.

Booker is another example. He was suddenly a possibly 2nd round faller, then oops... Top 11

Gruden says he thinks Grant might be the best defensive player out of the entire draft when they look back in 10 years, or something to that effect.
Well, for a historical parallel, eleven years earlier the Rams drafted Aaron Donald at #13 overall. How many Dolphins fans would object should Kenneth Grant enjoy a similar career trajectory? (Yes, I already know that it's unlikely, I'm simply speculating.)

Booker doesn't move very well. He is not a top Guard. I had the tackles/Guards over Jonah, but the only Guard I would have considered a starter is Donovon Jackson. I would have taken Rutlage because the position falls off a cliff after him, but Jonah was the last starting Guard IMO. And it was just him and Jackson after Membou, Banks, Connolley, and of course Campbell.

I mocked Harmon and Jonah to us. Honestly, Grant or Harmon was a coin flip to me. I'm perfectly happy picking Grant at 13 since the OL options were all off the table.

I love Jonah but I wouldn't have traded a 3rd to get him. There were plenty of other OL talent + another player is a better use of draft resources imo.

Once Ty Robinson and CJ West got snatched up, I wanted Quincy Riley in the 4th too. I was pissed we traded out.

What do I know though? I'm just a guy on the couch. :cigar
