Whatever with all this talk about bringing in capers to be the new DC. I say we make an offer for bates to come back. We had a top 10 D when he was here and he is about to leave green bay because they didnt give him a HC job. Unless he gets a HC job I cant see too many places better than here to be a DC.

I think Jim was a great DC and had the respect of all the D, but if he was back with Saban, he wouldn't have the control he wants. Saban wouldn't trust him to run his schemes.

Capers would be far better for this D with what Saban wants to do with it and anyway Capers had a great D-Coordinator track record. Bates only was good later on when he developed better schemes that weren't so vanilla.

I love Bates as much as the next guy. But Bates had a great defense because he had guys like Madison, Surtain, Vincent, Marion, Thomas, Taylor, Gardner, Bowens, etc. Bates' schemes are far to vanilla for Saban. I also believe Saban is looking towards the 3-4 more than the 4-3. This fact alone doubles Capers' value to us.

You know I'm not so sure that the Fins will even have a 3-4 soon. It's not like Matt Roth is a 3-4 DE or is really suited to play 3-4 OLB. I think what we'll have soon is a large 4-3 with large and fast LBs that CAN play a 3-4 to mix it up. Basically a VERY BIG DEFENSE

Why so we can blow big games late? Our defense will be better with Saban's scheme and Capers is better suited to run that. I dont like those vanilla defenses we ran with Bates. There were good on paper but big game choke defenses that good teams ate up when it mattered.

Capers and Saban are 10x the DC that Bates is....Sorry, besides he doesn't really fit with what Saban wants to do with his D...

The problem that I had with Bates was how predictable the D was. I dont realy like just lining up and saying "we know what we are going to do and we know that you know what we are going to do but we are just going to beat you with exicution." I just never have liked that coaching mindset.

Bates ran Wannys vanilla "D". Bates on his own merits, thats kinda hard to judge.

bates kicked *** up there in greenbay with a bunch of nobodys...

lets face it bates is a fantastic coordinator... its not all about the players.

but this team is going in a different direction with its defense.
Bates should look for a job with a team that has a great offense.
maybe the rams

totally agree.

1) Bates was overrated (perhaps it was because of Wanny reining him in, we'll never know)

2) Bates defense was so completely opposite of Saban's that it would be the dumbest move ever.

Why the hell would anyone on this board want to go in the reverse direction when things are startng to go so well for us?

sorry, but capers is a lot better than bates. he was good for what he had to do, but dc has more to give and that's the bottom line. anyone who can't see that hasn't seen what the steelers were in their glory!! let's get over the, "let's get bates back crap!!" he's gone and gone onto to greener pastures!!:fire:

Capers has more respect around the league as a DC than Bates, and he runs the style of defense Saban likes, which is much more agressive.

Dom Capers is the best D-Coordinator in the league besides Marvin Lewis. He built that early 90's BLITZburgh Steelers Defense. He left the year before they went to the superbowl, but he is the one that got all the pieces in place. I would love to have Dom Capers running our D. It means wed be in a permanent 3-4 meaning Jason Taylor will be a tweener. Matt Roth is the perfect end for the 3-4 same with Bowens, Carter and Holliday. Then in a couple years Manny Wright will be beasting it all day. Yeah I'd like to keep it switching up from 4-3 to 3-4 constantly during the game, but I think we could have a lot more success under Dom Capers. We'd need to get another 1 or 2 LB's, but with Saban that won't be too hard.

I love Jim Bates but he did run a very predictable Defense. Thats wha all the players said at the beginning of the year. We need to get our D to be swarming just causing absolute havoc all game. We are so close (1 more CB if Poole doesn't work out), and I think Dom Capers is the answer.

In terms of the defenses they run, Saban and Bates would fit together about like oil and water.
