PALM BEACH, FL -- Former Syracuse University fullback and former Miami Dolphin Robert Konrad survived falling off a fishing boat, and an incredible 9 hour swim to shore in Palm Beach, Florida.

WPBF-TV reports Konrad fell off a fishing boat Wednesday night. He was in the water for at least 9 hours, and managed to swim to shore.

The station, which has been in contact with the Coast Guard, says Konrad was fishing offshore when he somehow fell off his boat. The boat was on autopilot and drifted away from him.

Wow that is an amazing story. Always liked Konrad, glad he came through. A true survivor

Holy ****. What a survival story and will to live.

Must be one hell of a swimmer.

Things I'd like to know: Life jacket or not? How far "off-shore"?

... Konrad told Coast Guard that boat was on auto pilot and got away from him. He came ashore near home in Palm Beach.

Konrad came ashore near a home on South Ocean Blvd. in Palm Beach, not his home.

A friend and I went out on my boat into the gulf stream. Beautiful deep blue water. After a few hours, sweating like hell, we both jumped off at the same time into he ocean to cool off.
That was really stupid.
By the time I surfaced, the boat was already moving away with the current and wave action. I swam as fast as I could for about 2 minutes before I finally was able to grab the outboard.
Exhausted, I hauled myself out. My friend wasn't as good a swimmer so he tread water and I went back for him.
Note to self...if you jump in, make sure you have a rope tied to the boat with you to stay with the boat.
That gulf stream is nothing to mess with. I can understand exactly what happened to him.
Not sure how Konrad could just fall out unless he was drinking or lost his balance.
A 9 hours swim is amazing. I did the mile swim in boy scouts in about an hour. Glad he made it. I am guessing he was 8-10 miles out.

If he was out in the gulf stream he probably would have ended up off Daytona beach. The current is 6 miles an hour due north.
Also not a great idea to go out at night alone. **** happens on the ocean.
