The Dolphins’ next free agent signing won’t be a quarterback, but could be another player who will help out the quarterback.

The Dolphins are spending the day with former Giants Pro Bowl center Shaun O’Hara, sources confirmed to the Post on Sunday. If all goes well with the workout and interviews, and everything checks out medically, O’Hara, 34, could be a Dolphin by the end of the day.

But the medical part is the big question surrounding O’Hara. Though he has been named to three straight Pro Bowls, O’Hara only played in six games last year after having surgery to correct injuries in both feet. But O’Hara feels confident enough in his feet that he declined to renegotiate his $3.45 million base salary with the Giants last week, opting instead to be cut and hit the open market.

O’Hara, entering his 12th season, would bolster an already strong offensive line. He has played both guard and center, and could allow Dolphins coach Tony Sparano to play rookie first-rounder Mike Pouncey at right guard this year.

i say bring him in ! esp if he plays center which i doubt these bone heads allow him to do. but him at center and pouncy at RG would be a great move IMO we'd be solid

another lineman sparano knows. O'Hara was with Sparano in cleveland.

Can't these guys ever truly look at really good players in their prime instead of just going with who they worked before ? Like the 2343432 linemen sparano handpicked from the dallas retread rack? who all sucked.

or ahem, linemen coming off bad injuries.

if he is healthy that is a good signing, but seriously can we please go get another playmaker! macolm floyd? moss? edwards? miller? bo scaife? come on now we need more offense! an injury prone running back is not enough!

Pouncey would not be a RG. He's a LG. There's a good reason why incognito is much better as a RG than LG. Because he isn;t mobile and LG is a lot harder to play in the NFL. Same reason why jerry was kicked to RG after that stint at LG in camp last year.

pouncey would be an ideal LG because of his abilities there. He's not a RG at all.

And we have PLENTY of people who can play RG anyway with Incognito, garner . jerry. berger.. but none of them are suitable, ideal, or even adequate left guards.

Right guard is the easiest position on the offensive line to master.. by far. It would be a total waste to put Pouncey at RG with the other linemen we have and the dire need for a good mobile and strong left guard

There goes Sparano...eyes always focused on that damn project offensive line of his.

Injury concern at center sounds about right.

Mike Pouncey played RG in college when his brother was the center. I can't understand why we don't have Carl Nicks on our radar.

Pouncey is a Right guard, not a left guard. He played RG then was switched to center which, I am not impressed with him at center at all. Too many botched snaps on colllege and that is hard to change.

As I've been saying on Twitter, I don't think this staff are going to move Pouncey anywhere. I know it seems a novel idea to take them at their word but Tony Sparano has insisted Pouncey is a Center from day one and reiterated that very recently.

Shaun O'Hara would move to Guard. Which Guard position, I don't know. It doesn't matter, Incognito will still be the other Guard. But they will surround Pouncey and make the line calls for him until he's ready. It's no coincidence they bring in two veterans with Center experience to compete on the line with Pouncey. He's a rookie and the Center game is a lot more mental than it is physical. O'Hara will probably take the lead in making the line calls, and Incognito will help...until Mike Pouncey is ready to do that on his own (which might not be in 2011).

Anyone who objects to this pickup is simply uneducated with personnel in the NFL. A solid pro bowl vetran to tutor the young guys like Long, Garner, Jerry, Jones, Pouncey, Feinga and so on. Great move. Hope we sign him. Solid leadership, depth and when healthy will be a great impact in our blocking schemes. He may suck at Qb's but Sparano has brought in a great groups of offensive lineman in his three years. I think Long is just kept out to play it safe and give him more time to rest. He will butting heads with the Pats come week 1. So I hope anyway

Either that or they are looking to release Berger because his only real position is center, he is not a good guard at all. With O'Hara, they have a legit G/C in the man. Issue here I guess are his feet and how much is he asking. Giants released him because he refused to re do his contract. No matter how people draw it up, we need a guard badly because John Jerry is certainly not the answer. The draft is a roll of the dice , Jerry just did not work out last year. MAYBE with more time on the field he will get better at his craft but with the short time period this year, we cannot wait for that.

In the NFL, for the dolphins, he is a LEFT Guard. RG is a dime a dozen position compared to LG, because RG is an easy position to master that requires the least skills on the offensive line. Add up all the salaries at every position on the O-line for all 32 NFL teams and you'll quickly discover that RG's make the least money BY far out of all 5 positions on the O-line, and for good reasons.

Do you know the differences in the attributes it takes to play left and right guard at this level, and what THIS TEAM requires at those positions ?

who cares about college, that's a totally different animal. Branden Albert was a guard in college but everything about him SCREAMED Offensive Tackle in the NFL, from all his abilities, attributes, skills and measurables... that's why he was drafted in the 1st round, to be an NFL Offensive Tackle.. who cares what position he played in college. They're two totally different things.

In the NFL, Pouncey is much better suited as a left guard with how most NFL teams use their left guards. And he is BY FAR our best left guard on the roster.. BY FAR. ... But if you plugged Pouncey at RG there would be almost no difference in play between Pouncey, Incognito and Garner at RG

I don't see how those are mutually exclusive.

JERRY did fairly well as the season progressed. You're forgetting his illness. If any of you think that any NFL player can be sick almost all of the pre-season, lose 25-30 lbs, then just magically recover and perform at a high level, you're certifiably insane!!

I DO 100% AGREE about BERGER. He's nothing but a C, and sucks at C. Having him as a "back-up C" would just mean that he's waiting for his turn to suck. The "constant" is the phrase "he sucks".

Spot on as usual Greyboy. I am completely in favor of this move as long as O'Hara checks out physically. Mike Pouncey is not Maukrice, and I don't expect him to be able to make all the right calls on the line from the get-go. Regardless of whether Mike Pouncey snaps the ball or not, having a veteran interior lineman calling the assignment shifts is something Pouncey and the Dolphins need. Having him also be a good player and role model is ideal. Even if this turns out to be a short term deal, I think it is a good move for us.

If he doesn't check out medically, obviously, no deal. Our defense is solid. Without adding one or two more quality OL, neither our QB nor our stable of running backs will succeed ... or stay healthy. This would be the first move Ireland has made in free agency that tells me we are not "all in" for the 2012 Draft QB sweepstakes.
