Harry Carson, the Giants Hall of Fame linebacker, had never met former Falcons safety Ray Easterling, but received a disturbing e-mail from him on March 18, 2011. Just over one year later, Easterling committed suicide, shooting himself in the head.Carson was the captain of the Giants, but really a captain for all players, past and present, teammates and those from other teams. He commands so much respect and players confide in him and count on him for guidance.Easterling sent the e-mail to Carson months before Easterling became the lead plaintiff in the first class action concussion-related lawsuit filed against the NFL. He had been moved by a letter Carson wrote about former Bears safety Dave Duerson (he played on the Giants’ 1990 Super Bowl team after Carson retired), who had committed suicide and was later found to have Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative disease of the brain caused by head trauma.“He wrote that he didn’t know how much longer he could hold on,” Carson told the Daily News.
