So I'm watching some game film of this guy and I'm trying to figure out why people are projecting him so high. He played tackle but most have him projected to play guard or center and for good observable reasons. His arms are way too short to play tackle in the NFL, he doesn't kick back quick enough in pass protection but once he gets his hands on someone they're usually done. He gets beat to the inside trying to overcompensate for not being able to beat faster players to the edge plus lack of arm length. He gets set up to the outside, longer armed defender attacks his outside shoulder and rips back to the inside. On the film vs non NFL level defenders he recovers more often than not but that won't translate in my opinion.

As a guard you could hide most of his flaws. He had good bench reps, awesome athletic measurables so he could make a living on the second level of defenses in the run game but I don't see him overpowering a lot of weaker competition like you'd expect from a projected high 1st rounder. I'd assume high second or late first round pick. Our 22 pick might be a slight reach but based on our off season I feel like this is who they are targeting.

Am i missing something?

I don't think Lamp is top 15 (random guess) on Miami's board. That doesn't mean I don't think he'll be the #22 pick. He COULD be if the higher ranked guys are gone, and I wouldn't be against it. But I don't think he's the "target."

A trade down like last year to get players or picks and drafting Lamp late in the first or 2nd would be a win in my opinion.

Portions of Alabama, where he looked really good IMO but had trouble vs faster rushers plus other games against lesser competition but I don't know enough about the other dudes he's playing against.

Yeah but you've gotta have a willing trade partner and the ability to still get your guy. I think he projects out as a solid starter at guard but the pick feels like a reach if that's the move but it's all relative to what's available at the spot.

I'm more curious if others, especially those that do more talent evaluation than I do as a casual observer, see something different.

sometimes I think NFL "experts" just pick names out of a hat lol. Lamp looks good, but immediate nfl starter and all pro "good"? I don't know.

I don't think you're really missing anything as some of the limitations he displayed at tackle are the reasons he'll move to guard in the NFL.

Though I do think arm length is vastly overrated for lineman. If you're out of position, arm length doesn't mean a damn thing anyways. If you're reaching, you're beat.

But if you can consistently maintain a balanced set within your base along with proper hand placement, initially and upon replacement after counters (like Lamp shows) you can and most likely will be very successful. Especially with the lateral movement he displays as well.

short area lateral quickness biggest issue I see on tape with lamp...

My thing with Lamp is I like the player (I like Robinson better) but I think I'd rather take an Asiata or Moton or Dawkins in the 3rd rather than using our 1st.
