I thought this was interesting, and I had not heard it before.

Olivea was drafted by the Chargers (209th overall) in the last round of the 2004 NFL Draft.

Originally valued as a third rounder, Olivea strained his pectoral muscle lifting weights about a week before the draft and this scared away a lot of teams. One of which was the Miami Dolphins, who wanted to take Olivea in the first day, but called just before their 3rd round pick to tell Olivea that they took him off their draft board because they thought he would need surgery. A. J. Smith, excited at the fact Olivea was off many draft boards, took him with one of their final picks. Concerning Olivea's injury status, AJ said, “We checked him out, like a lot of clubs, but medical staffs vary. We rely heavily on our medical staff, and he checked out perfectly. We’re not going to take a chance if we think a player is damaged goods. We were doing other things (in earlier rounds), so selfishly we were kind of glad he took a ride (dropped in draft status) and he was still there. We kind of stole one in the seventh round

I know he hasn't signed with anyone, but I am aware that was a different FO wanting him.

Still cant believe he is available. Far from a star, but for depth, it couldnt hurt.

We are VERY young along the OL.

Yeah, I can't beleive he is not signed. I've never followed this guy, but when I play Madden he is one of the top lineman in the game.

I figure if hes on the Chargers he has to have some kind of potential.

We all know the Phins medical staff sucks...stories like this just add to that notion.

i'm guessing a lot of the negative sentiment towards our medical staff stems from the drew brees, culpepper fiasco. our staff said no to brees because of shoulder who ends up having pro bowl year and yes to culpepper whose knee is still not 100 percent.

Doctor Caldwell Is the man too I dont know if he still works with us but when i went to him he fixed my knee up something good.

He had a great year and then last year had a down year and the Chargers kicked him away . We should pick him up. He could start here until the Rookies are ready. I dont know why is is still a FA. Chris Naeole either. Both could start. Olivea is only 26 i believe so why not

That and even though it's not the same people, OJ McDuffie's career was prematurely ended by the medical staff. The Dolphins just have a long history of bad decisions by team doctors.
