franchise tag?

What about a tag and trade of Soliai?

Let them both walk. They would criple us financially and we need the cap space for QB. That is why we are moving to the 4-3. As more and more teams move to the 3-4, these type players become harder to find and more costly. Langford is pedestrian and easily replaced. I wouldnt spend the money on him even if we stayed in the 3-4. Solia is just too damn expensive, but a hard piece to replace if we were staying in a 3-4. He has us over a financial "barrel". I think that is why we are going 4-3.

What about a tag and trade of Soliai?

While Soliai hasn't played badly this year, his play dropped off after getting tagged. I just don't see us taking the risk of tagging him and getting stuck with a guy at 12-14 million who is probably not going to fit in a 4-3 scheme. Better to let him walk and sign a monster contract with someone else. At least then we could be in a good position to land a high compensatory pick next year.

Langford is kinda in the same boat. He is a good 3-4 DE but is not a superstar. He is solid though. I just don't know if we can move him inside and expect him to blossom. Especially for the kind of money the tag would entail. We would probably be better off letting him walk too unless someone comes to us wanting to do a sign and trade that would get us a decent pick.

They both should have been shopped around last season
knowing we had little interest in signing either.

Another example of how inept Ireland is
if we let both walk with nothing more than a supplement draft pick

Soliai is a dominant NT. I would tag him and let him shop himself and see if we get a decent pick for him. If the Fins are active in FA like I think they will be, the compensatory pick might not be as good as many think.

Or maybe if he is tagged, a deal can made with Ireland and his rep.

The team should reward its own guys that have developed with the best contracts.

Or they're both better fits in a 3-4 and thats the defense Miami played this past season. Ireland isn't nearly as "inept" as some of you want to think he is

Philbin knows what he needs and they don't need to make a choice just yet....if they let them both go is for a reason.

Ozzy rules!!

Let them both sign elsewhere. The Fins would qualify for compensatory picks for both. Better use of the money elsewhere, especially if we move to a 4-3. I would rather see Odrick start over Langford anyway. He's better.

I remember seeing on here that with the new CBA, it prohibits teams from tagging-trading someone. maybe someone can clear this up? if we tagged him, we couldnt be tooo big of players in FA due to cap. I would like to keep one of Soliai or Langford, but i dont know how that will work. Soliai will fit into any scheme, but will get paid to be a 3-4 NT as opposed to a 4-3 DT, which we have in Odrick, Starks(final year in contract) and Mcdaniel.

We should keep Solai and franchise him. He can line up at DT this season. Work out a long trade deal later.
Regarding Langford, we have a lot of guys like him and ODrick can easily take his place in the rotay. A good player.
The Jets and Patriots will scoop up our cast offs, fill in their holes, while we create new ones. These are good players.
The team is in transition...yet again. IMHO we need to take time and carefully change the roster and trade our players wisely to get maximum return. We have a habit of dumping or letting go useful players without having their replacements in place. This is going to take a few seasons.

Again I'm with langer, Young and very good Dline don't fall off trees. Why are you all so willing to let him walk? Bring him back and put him next to Starks on the inside, keep our MLB clean to make tackels ala Bowens and Gardener. You still need a big bodied tackle to stop the run in a 4-3. If you have two penetrators like many have suggested like Starks and Odrick on the inside you look like the Saints from years past or the Lions. Sure you can hit the qb but you can't stop the run worth a damn.

under the new CBA, franchise tags cost much less. last year, tagging a NT was around $12 million, this year it's like $8 million. still I would only do it if I were sticking with the 3-4

There is no point in tagging Soliai as a way to hold onto him until a long term contract can be reached. We tried this last year, Soliai agents isn't dumb. He won't allow the franchise tag to be factored into the new contract "money".

If we stay at 3-4, obviously re-signing Soliai is priority #1. Kids that keep saying Soliai fell off the map this year are just reading stats. As for Langford unless he is willing to give a hometown discount, I say let him walk. Time for Odrick to step up.
