Pros: Explosive small-college tackle has been instrumental in the Texas State success in recent seasons. Evans is an athletic, mobile defender who flashes playmaking ability from the inside. He is quick on the snap and plays with good leverage and footwork, allowing him to use his powerful frame and base to gain penetration into the backfield.
Cons: Needs to improve his read and reaction skills. He has good functional strength, but will benefit from a concentrated weight training program to bulk up and improve his ability to strike with his hands and hold the point of attack better. He shows flashes of fine power and quickness and will look very dominant in some games, but disappear during other periods of games.
Numbers: As a senior, he made 55 tackles while being a force in the middle in 14 starts. He added 18 tackles for loss and five sacks.
Skinny: Raw defender with definite upside, but needs time and development that probably make him no better than a No. 4 DT or practice squad player for at least a season.

"
Texas State defensive tackle, Fred Evans is a 6'5", 305 pound defensive tackle, who began his college football career at the University of Illinois. He had limited high school football experience due to the fact he concentrated on his favorite sport--water polo. But by the time he was a high school junior, he weighed 300 pounds and it was inevitable he would play football, although he admits he didn't take football seriously as a teen -- which caught up to him at the Big 10 level. After a stint at a junior college, Evans went to Texas State, where he turned into a very focused and dedicated athlete. He had 17.5 tackles for losses and 6.5 sacks in 2004, on his way to being named D-1AA All-American. As an encore, Evans has put together another fine season for the Bobcats, even though his stats are down a bit (12.5 TFL’s and 2.5 sacks in 9 games). He’s also accepted an invite, along with Texas State quarterback Barrick Nealy to the Hula Bowl, a post season All-Star game. It’s too early to tell where Evans might be drafted, but he’s a definite Day 2 possibility. He's big and strong, a true star at his level, who is often the focus of opposing offenses. Evans also comes from an athletic back round, as his cousin is Major League outfielder Gary Matthews Jr., who also plays in Texas these days." - Draft Daddy.com

Dolphins | Team showing a lot of interest in F. Evans

Bart Isley, of the Daily Record, reports the Miami Dolphins are showing a lot of interest in Texas State DT Fred Evans. Evans, at 6-foot-5 307 pounds, projects mostly as a defensive tackle, but some teams have discussed using him at defensive end in either the 3-4 or goaline alignments. The Miami Dolphins showed a lot of interest in Evans in the days leading up to the NFL Draft, bringing him to Miami to tour their facilities and meet with head coach Nick Saban.

I cant understand why we take this guy instead or Rodrique Wright.

Saban likes good work ethics...quote from the Texas State Web site>>>

Signed with Texas State as an offensive lineman but was moved to defensive tackle the first week of spring practices (2004) ... had the size a coaching staff looks for in an offensive lineman, but beyond that moved incredibly well, had great hip-flexibility and great speed ... move to defense marked a better fit for his body type ... has the frame of a big man but the movement of a smaller player, a combination that would have allowed him to play anywhere in the country ... one of the things that differentiated him from other players was his approach to practice and games ... approached every day with the idea of what could he do to become better and worked hard to improve his technique ...

Whats real funny is that NFLDRAFTCOUNTDOWN.com doesnt have him in the top 35 DT's but good old Wright rated #5 overall is still there....
