Say what you will about the current status of our team, but I sort of like players saban has been picking for our future defense (which probably starts next year). Think of it, our D line will be young and nasty with a 3 man DT rotation of Evans Big Vick and 1 or 2 Wright's. Crowder, Allen and Daniels will back that up for a long time + it looks like well have a chace to get some good talent, draft wise, this year as well. If the offense clicks and doesnt need draft choice attention (o line excluded), Saban can draft the remaining pieces of a soon to be outstanding..no name.. young defense. ALL IS NOT LOST. look ahead if youre down about this season. You cant reasonably say you expected a high playoff birth or a superbowl in dauntes first year. we didnt even get anywhere with the greatest QB of all time. Give it time.

I even forgot to add Roth, who is going to be a beast in this league. His effort and attitude make up for any physical shortcomings, which he doesnt have much of.

If these guys were such beasts they would be playing more.

They need to add a young pass rushing outside linebacker and another young pass rushing defense end to pair with Roth.

. "Yea we might win a game, but I bet Ronnie Brown gets his leg chopped off". PhinRenaissance that's a great way of thinking about things, and I completely agree. I see crowder making plays and Roth getting all jacked up, and just thinking about the other guys, and I think we will have a pretty sick defense in the not so distant future

Totally agree with this thread, we have the neucleous of a good future defense. Another year under Saban/Capers complicated schemes isn't going to hurt us either.

Roth, Evans, Rodrique Wright, and Vickerson should make for a mean DL and our secondary is younger and faster than last year, they just need more time in the system. Good post.

Not with the salaries the vets are eating up. Once they filter out the positions have already been filled.

salaries don't win games! good players do!! so again why aren't they playing?

Crowder and Roth will soon highlight the defense in about 2-3 years.

Roth is just in the unlucky situation of having to play behind Jason Taylor and/or Kevin Carter. Crowder has already shown us potential to be a Pro Bowler.

With that being said, we need some help in the secondary really bad for now and for the future. Daniels will be nothing better than a solid # 2 or a great # 3 in his career. Jason Allen is struggling and there is no young stud out there to carry the secondary.

I expect that Vickerson will contribute as a backup. Wright needs to get out of his funk because he is the best bet on our D-line to add starting youth.

Other than that, I don't see alot of youth out there that are starting material.

2005 year of the defensive line overhaul
2006 year of the secondary overhall
2007 year of the linebacking overhall

I think future players are:
CB: Travis Daniels
FS: Jason Allen
MLB: Channing Crowder
LE: Matt Roth
DT: Evans/Vickerson/Wright/Wright
DT: Evans/Vickerson/Wright/Wright

I think those positions are covered. The rest are all up for grabs.

Roth is more built for a LE I don't really see him as being an elite pass rusher but he will be like an Aaron Kampan. Good against the run and pass.

Crowder will be a beast at MLB

Daniels should be a good corner

Hopefully Allen works out

Between all of our DTs, I figure that at least 2 out of those 5 should work out.

That still leaves

i will belive it when i see it..

Vickerson and Evans have never even played. Dont make it sound like we have the next Tommie Harris here.
