Tales from the stats (Game1 - Atlanta)

Game1 - Atlanta: Tales from the stats
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=290913001
Offense Good:
Pennington had an 84 QB rating, over 80 is good.
Rushing attack was over 4 yards per attempt.
Bess looked ok.

Offense Bad:
4 turnovers
Fasano's two fumbles
Jake long giving up 2 sacks
o-line giving up 4 sacks
4-11 on third downs isn't very good

Defense Good:
Jason Taylor looks big. For the first time in his career he doesn't look like a linebacker, but a d-lineman. He's put on weight. He looked good out there.
Merling played great, and looked like the 2nd round pick that he is.
A sack by Ferguson, nice.
Run defense was good.

Defense Bad:
Matt Ryan had a 98 qb rating.
The safeties had a ton of tackles, and the linebackers had very few.
Not really impressed with Crowder or Ayodelle, today.
Tony Gonzales really exploited us today; he looked like a pro-bowler
(in contrast to Fasano, who I really like, but who looked like a toilet-bowler today).

Special Teams:
Their ST's were clearly better than ours.

Final thoughts:
You don't win many games where your team has 4 more turnovers than the opponents. Atlanta has a very good offense. They are not known for their defense, which looked very good today (or our offense was just that bad)(unclear). Time of possesion was even. Offensive Yards were pretty even. But we got outplayed today, and perhaps outcoached as well. It's not time for the doom and gloom yet. This is only one game. Bad games happen sometimes. Certainly a disappointing way to open the season, though.

I just want to say, if you look at the stats, the game was VERY closely matched. I personally think if we could have 2 of those turnovers back the game would have been very very different. I seriously think we would have won. We do need work, but it's definitely not the end of the world.

They held onto the ball for less than 2 minutes more than us. Due to turnovers of course. They had only 3 more first downs than us, and had to convert 4 more 3rd downs. They were 40% on 3rd down and we were 36%. Not a massive difference. Ryan had 50 more yards passing than Pennington, and that was on just 1 more completion. 21 for penny, and 22 for Ryan. That's a pretty big difference in YPA. their offense gained 22 more yards, but that also is a result of turnovers. Giving the offense the ball will NOT win any games.

We gave the ball away 4 times, and they gave it away none, yet they only beat us by 12 points. That says something for the resilience of the team, especially the defense. The offense was not in rhythm today, and hopefully Long has better days ahead of him, but it really isn't as bad as it looks. The Atlanta defense is MUCH better than most gave them credit for, and I was impressed by their hard hitting play. I think we were evenly matched on offense and defense, but the special teams play was also a huge factor. When you cant get past the 20 yard line you don't need to run it out of the endzone. Our guys need to learn how to block a little better. I was at the game and it was a heartbreaker.

For all of you that are calling for players to be cut and heads to roll, you need to get a grip. We played with a lot of heart, and had a few early mistakes that cost us the game. Had those mistakes been eliminated I am fully confident we would have won, and all of you would probably be singing a different tune. Regardless, Atlanta is a good team and if we were a bad team the score would have been MUCH worse. It could have easily been 35-7.

how can you knock the ILBs?? they were part of what kept Michael Turner in check which im sure was priority number 1 going into this game...

lmao...toilet bowler

Poor guy...he really laid a turd sandwich yesterday. I won't be surprised to see him run with two hands over the ball Monday night.

Agree, both Ayodele and Crowder we always in the middle of the push to keep Turner in check. I think it is more that we have two great run supporting safties who can tackle (well usually, Bell missed Tony G on the TD).

Bell missed TG and there was blatant holding that was not called on a potential downfield tackler. I don't know who got held, but it was obvious I seriously thought it was coming back but it was never flagged.

Saw the same thing, it was White with a mit full of jersey and an arm wrap around him. Too bad it was missed but it happens.

Our special teams missed an extra point and 2 FG's. I don't think it was better. Push?

Either Chad Pennington is too conservative about his throwing decisions or our receivers are just not getting enough separation and getting open. Maybe we need to get Patrick Turner in there and Penny can throw some high balls to him that only he could catch.
