• Most NFL coaches ideally like to settle on starters by the third preseason game. Coach Adam Gase apparently feels no such obligation.

There are at least three legitimate battles for starting jobs, and Gase doesn’t feel anxious to get resolution anytime soon, certainly not during a three-day mandatory minicamp that runs Tuesday through Thursday.

“As long as we feel good about whatever we’re doing by the first game of the season, that’s all I really care about,” Gase said. “You’d love it if you could walk into training camp and say, ‘Here are the 22 guys that are starting on both sides of the ball.’ I just don’t know how realistic that is.

“We’ll take that thing up to the first game if we have to. If something goes wrong during the season, we’ll make a change. But we’re going to find the best 11 on each side of the ball every week.”

The three most competitive starting battles: one cornerback slot (Xavien Howard vs. Tony Lippett); one defensive tackle position (Jordan Phillips vs. Earl Mitchell) and right guard (Billy Turner, Kraig Urbik, Dallas Thomas, Jamil Douglas, Jermon Bushrod).

Slot corner is not a competition? Does anyone really feel comfortable with Bobby McCain all the way?

No not really, but it depends on health of Ifo for competition, if he is not healthy probably won't have much competition there unfortunately.

I hope that Phillips can up his game and win the battle at defensive tackle. That was one of my concerns in the draft and a reason I thought Miami might draft a DT fairly high. Really looking forward to seeing Lippett and Howard battle it out. Lippett played really well in training camp last year and in the little bit of playing time he had.

I'm predicting Douglas wins the starting job at right offensive guard. Just a gut feeling based mostly on his work ethic.

Might be some other battles that would be a surprise. How about Hewitt battling for the starting job at weakside?

why have a starting RG? Why not just rotate our Guards? It couldn't hurt to rotate 3 different guys, keep fresh bodies in there all the time. Use Billy Turner for goal line.

I expect that Jelani is well ahead. However, Hewitt exceeded all expectations last season and remains a good development prospect.

I could feel comfortable after a game or two. Forget pre season. He's never going to be good until he gets out there but he is worth a look. I'm very optimistic but I can't be comfortable yet. Its not logical.

Maybe Lucas will give him some competition there or even which ever CB loses out in the boundary CB competition.

Bobby should get lots of playing time regardless.

This team will be trying to find its identity for the first few games. Hopefully the opponents unfamiliarity with the new team and staff will help us get some wins out of the gate.

I have that bad taste in my mouth a little from when they lined him up wide, which is really unfair to be honest, I think he could work out in the slot but just like you said not comfortable just yet.

Mccain has to get stronger than last year...too much separation out of cuts...for both he and lippett the offseason program was mission critical...core strength and in their hands

If ifo could ever get right hed win that slot job hands down but what percentage player are we gonna get in camp? You could see this team look to 2017 there given his peanuts rookie contract

That's the thing Ifo probably can't get right fast enough to win the spot - so there is no competition really for the nickel spot unless you want to count Patmon and I think I know that answer.

They may be saving ifo for camp...too early to say...or he may not be in the 2016 plan at all...we will find out not long into camp
