So this guy is taking a hardass approach with guys that he feels are sandbagging a bit.

Sounds awfully Shula-ish to me. I think it's great. A shot in the arm. Desperately overdue.

Great teams have one thing in common. They bust their asses at all times. And I'd say it's pretty obvious that not all of our guys do.

OK. I've read that some folks are afraid of Gase "losing the locker room". A viable question. Legitimate concern.

But what is the greater evil? Playing for **** while "keeping the locker room", or losing it for demanding excellence?

For real: What is the risk? Shula had absolute command. Those guys put out or were gone. And it paid off handsomely.

Why put up with it? If keeping the locker room gets you results like we already have, I'd say we're ****ed regardless.

I support Gase in trying to fix the culture. I'm also worried because while Shula did the same thing, Shula had a lot of say in his roster and who the Dolphins picked. Gase is at the mercy of our putrid and no talent spotting front office. Get rid of a player and you may get something worse in it's place.

Yeah, that's valid.

But it's also not playing to win. It's playing to not lose. And if that is the case, we are screwed for a long time.

Gase said yesterday how he and Vance are just frustrated with the players cause there's too many mistakes being made on both sides of the football, which makes it very hard for them to evaluate the scheme and figure out if they need to change it cause it's not working.

Basically, players are not doing what they're being coached to do. And yeah, it's pissing him off. It's pissing ME off. So I agree with his approach.

The problem is, at some point you just have to look at the roster and admit that we simply don't have enough talent at different positions. And that's Tannenbaum's fault.

Better to do it now than later, set the tone for his regime, and it sends a msssage to his bosses that he's genuinely serious about instituting a change in culture. I think it sends a message to TBaum/Grier that they can't be acquiring lethargic/unattentive players.

Two comments. 1) I'm on record wanting Gase to prove that "do it right or sit' rule will be enforced. But, I realize that's not such a good idea on a short week. We'll see what next week brings. 2) While I'm not a 'baum fan, I'm confident he doesn't make decisions in a vacuum. 'baum: "Hey, Adam, I just signed a DT." Gase: "What? I don't need a DT. We need corners." Secondly, when 'baum DOES find a player to meet a need, he doesn't sign the guy without letting Gase know. Yes, we can dump on 'baum (justifiably), but 'baum isn't alone in the blame.

Guys get paid mostly on stats, not on whether they "did what they were supposed to to help the team win." In this light, freelancing, especially by players with a lot of raw talent, is completely unsurprising.

Sorry, that's not really the topic here. The question is whether Gase has built up enough respect to be such a hard ass. Time will tell...I'm not sure he has but I hope I'm wrong.

I don't see him losing the locker room since he will be here at least 3-4 years. That tends to happen more when the coach is on the hot seat and players have been dealing with ****ty coaching/systems for a few years without positive results. Any players quitting on the team now are just screwing themselves as they will be shipped outta here in the offseason.

Of course he isn't the only one at fault, but at the end of the day he's still being paid to build a decent roster and IMO he hasn't done that in his time here with the Dolphins. Especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Sometimes I wonder about the mental aptitude of the players on the Fins. Perhaps they just don't have enough between the ears to be NFL players. I will give them the benefit of the doubt though for at least a few more weeks because it is a new system. After that, you should know your playbook/role on the field.

This team has been ****ty for too long for any player to act with self rightiousness. They better buck the fck up or get out. Anyone worried about losing the locker room is not thinking right. Why would anything other than the approach he's taking work? It was tried by the past 3 regimes and 10 plus years. Cmon guys, pull your heads out of your orphases

And sometimes being that hard ass can help earn the respect. If certain guys aren't doing their jobs right, you can bet there are other guys on the team that want to see them handled - e.g. benched or made to get it right.

Either way i'm all for getting this done now vs later. Sure I'd love to see a longshot wildcard but i'm all for playing the long game. Do what needs to be done to weed out the guys routinely causing problems on the field.

Agreed. As I've said elsewhere, anyone who's played organized sports knows the guys who aren't playing all out and/or are holding the team back. Benching those guys won't hurt the locker room.

Yeah I'm with you there. But let's pretend one or more of those players are front office "darlings" - signings that made a big splash. Who do you think Ross would side with in such a scenario? Gase is strong-minded and blunt - he could soon find himself on the wrong end of a FO-HC struggle. For the record, I hope it's Williams freelancing and not Suh. Suh would be a much bigger problem.
