The 12th Man
Just wanted to start a little discussion about this since we seem to have to some Rockets fans around here as well as some basketball gurus. It's not official but the trade seems to be the Rockets #8 pick Rudy Gay & and Stromile Swift for former #6 overall pick, forward Shane Battier.
I was skeptical about the trade at first. I was super excited when the Rockets drafted Gay, playmaker, scorer, untapped talent, etc. But like my thoughts, the trade is getting mixed reviews. Now it's starting to grow on me though. It's obvious that Swift isn't fitting in to the game plan in Houston. Van Gundy thought he could be the player the Rockets needed, but its obivous he's not. So not only do we move the player, but also the contract, which in turn frees up some cap space to go after a good, starting player in FA.
Gay is going to be a very good player in this league but I like aquisition of Battier because I think he fits into Van Gundy's defensive scheme 1000x better than Swift did. He's also more experienced than Gay and will come in right away and be up to NBA speed. He's right around the age of our core players (McGrady, Yao, Alston, etc.) and I don' think Houston is in a rebuilding stage. We're a playoff team, when we can stay healthy and Battier will be a better fit to the puzzle than Swift was. I'm leaning towards liking the trade now.
Thoughts, comments?
