While reading the Great Blue Northern Report today, they are reporting that the Dolphins are interested in Jay Cutler, but now feel he will be out of reach. To move up and get him, GBN stated:

"Meanwhile, sources in Miami are suggesting that the Dolphins, who are also reportedly intrigued by Cutler, but don’t believe he will still be on the board when they pick 16th overall, may be considering using RB Ricky Williams as trade bait to move up from that spot."

I just don't like the idea of trading Ricky, considering he is still in his prime, was extremely productive last year, and has such a salary-cap friendly contract. I would rather take Whitehurst later in the draft, who may not be that far behind Cutler. After all, the rookies have a year to work out the kinks and I think Whitehurst, after a year of learning the system, could be very good for us. McCown is a reasonably priced free agent I would like to add this year also.

Sorry, but this franchise needs a franchise QB..

I would rather have Cutler and Ronnie than Frerotte (Or another scrub) and Ricky/Ronnie...

I would be happy if this happened as Ricky only really has 1-2 years left and a franchise QB is rare.

What about Whitehurst makes you believe that? And why McCown? Unless someone has information on Whitehurst that has up to this point remained top secret and Saban is privy to it, Whitehurst has journeyman written all over him. Aren't you hoping for better?

I really would not read anything into these 'trade up with Ricky' reports. I really just think Saban is just trying to create a false illusion that we wants to trade up around the league. I just can't see him giving away valuable picks... my $.2

i agree

How many spots do you think hte Dolphins would have to trade up to aquire Cutler? The Dolphins pick 16th, but Cutler probably won't be around then. If we trade up to the top 6 or 7 spots ( that is a long way to move up mind you) do you think he would still be available then?:dolphins:

I guess that is the great debate. I just don't see Cutler as being that much better or different from Whitehurst. They are very similar in many ways. Whitehurst was actually much better at the game (which is more important than practice in my opinion) that Cutler. His arm is only about 75%, because of shoulder surgery also. When you also consider he could be had for a 2nd round pick or less (I think he's going to move up by draft day), we could keep Ricky, and still have a first round pick, that makes Whitehurst a very tempting pick.

We are going to have to give up more than just Ricky to move up to San Francisco's pick.

We will probably have to give up next years first rounder also. Ricky will just be used to sweeten the deal.

You can be pretty sure Cutler is a good QB if Saban is willing to give up that much for him.

Does anyone remember that Marino was drafted 27th and was passed over by several teams that selected quarterbacks. Jay Cutler has made some nice throws at the Combine in Mobile but I'm sure Ken O'Rrien, Tony Eason, Todd Blackledge were all considered franchise quarterbacks at one time. If picking out who is or isn't going to be a better franchise quarterback was so easy than why are we discussing it here? Go get a job as a coach.

Doesnt make a difference, its not like if we drafted cutler he would start anyway. In the meantime we might as well keep ricky and pound the f=king ball because we will still have gus till cutler matures.

It makes more sense to keep ricky than it is to trade him..

Like Jnaledu stated, if SABAN is willing to move up to get him, I am CONFIDENT that he is a franchise type QB..

I am fine with trading up, but there is still no guarantee that Cutler is a franchise QB. Everyone seems to think he is a sure thing. While I like what I've seen and read on the guy you still never know. Croyle ,Whitehurst, or Olsen may turn out to be the franchise guy out of this draft. Time will tell and hopefully Nick and the scouts nail this on on the head whichever route they choose to go.
