Ohio State's Gholston could be No.1 overall pick?

As much as Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston wowed scouts during his personal workout Friday, he did the same during private individual workouts Monday for the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets. Miami, which owns the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft, sent its defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni to Columbus to personally work out Gholston on Monday morning. Miami is scheduled to pick first overall. After Miami worked out Gholston in the morning, the New York Jets, who own the sixth overall pick, put the Ohio State defensive end through the pre-draft version of two-a-days, with him providing a personal workout session for Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum. It has now become apparent that Gholston could become the top defensive player drafted, and is unlikely to slip much beyond the sixth overall pick. -- NFL Network

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Gholston is going to be a beast but I'm not sure if he is worth the first pick overall. With our defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni personally working him out, I think they are taking a real look at him. This could either mean they will take him #1, or they have a plan to trade down some to take him. What do you all think??

Personally, I think that if Gholston is stiff and cant change directions quick then he isnt worth the first pick cause what do RB's do they change directions after the handoff. We shoulfd look at game film first because the combine is overrated.

I don't think it will happen, unless we trade down a couple spots, which is also seeming hard to do.

Pasqualoni's specialty is OLB in the 3-4; I think the reasoning for sending him would be to determine whether or not he's the type of player that can fit in the 3-4. There's more uncertainty around Gholston's abilities than C. Long's, and personally I wouldn't be shocked if we just attended Long's pro day. They probably already know enough about him, and Kacy Rodgers was in charge of working out Long's group of DL at the combine in the athletic drills. Adam Schefter also reported that we and the Rams also took Gholston out to dinner the night before his pro day last week, and IMO probably to figure out what type of player/leader he is on and off the fields - not as much research is needed to figure that out about C. Long.

If Miami likes what they found out about Gholston, then yes, I'm all for taking him at #1 overall, but I think it's just to find out about the things they don't know, as they probably have a pretty good idea about Chris Long's on/off field "intangibles" if you will, already.

This regime will leave no stone unturned, they will strongly evaluate all the top guy's top to bottom.

Obviously a trade down and then still get V.G. would be ideal, but a trade down is not looking good. The only way imo is if we REALLY get ATL to believe we are considering Ryan, then force them to panic into coming up to #1(not likely).

Chris Long is the popular pick but there is a chance we select Gholston. Ive said it before it may come down to "who" we can get a deal done with pre-draft.

Don't most teams that pick number 1 overall evaluate between 4 and 10 players? I don't put much stock in to it, but his stock does seem to be rising overall.

Parcells will pick Long over Gholston.
Long will be a leader in the locker room- he is the more cerebral player and can move to multiple positions on the field.
Gholston is a reserved, quiet player who just rushed the QB from the end position at OSU. He is workout warrior with great physical tools but Long will give the Dolphins more intangibles.

You obviously haven't seen Gholston play much. He moved around quite a bit, maybe not as much as Long, but he played in a two point stance and dropped into pass coverage quite frequently, as well as moving from strongside to weakside end in obvious pass-rushing situations.
